Interesting L42A1 Pictures - Gordon Highlanders

While not very good quality picture, it's one I've not seen published before - not sure of location though.......

Jusat the terrain looks like the Falklands to me. Some of the first set are clearly posed.....

Hmmm. It seems very clear to me Peter that you are quite happy to pass comment on folks opinions or questions with very thinly veiled or barbed remarks and how in your "limited experience" nobody else in the world appears to have any comprehension of the finer workings of the Enfield Rifle system other than you. Alas it also seems clear that you are also unable to comprehend comedic sarcasm which I would have thought someone with a service background would be immune too.

Perhaps I'm out of line but when I was being apprenticed if I couldn't take the joke I would have been plainly and simply told to "get over myself" and "grow a set"

It is ok Simon being a wild colonial i got it. Peter must have got a knock back (not quite the young bull:surrender: any more like most of us:sos: ) so was feeling a little fragile.:help:

Humor is like insults, fine rifles, beautiful wimmen, religon, politics, etc., etc., etc., ... It is all in the eye of the beholder.

However, I didn't view Simon's comment as humor or an insult, but, rather an affirmation of stating the obvious. A subject many books have been devoted to.

If you fellows were a little closer, I would buy you each a Sam Adams dark ale so you can sit down and chat about the finer points of Lee-Enfields and preen each others ruffled feathers so as not to initiate an international incident.

Remember the goose being a bit to greasy, and the 7.62 "High Calibre" didn't help I suppose, as it was like searching for the sixpence in the Xmas pud................who swollowed it?

I'm surprised there was any goose left if one of them gents did shoot it? any more info Gil ?

In a roundabout way, reminds me of a similar little incident but in England (I think it was Otterburn). Driving back from the ranges, over the restricted range road, not open to public access, driver of a Bedford sees a damaged/injured but still alive (alas, not for long.....) sheep in the road. Landrover behind also stops and young Officer tells driver to load one round in pistol and shoot the sheep which sadly but humanely ended its life. Got back to camp, reported incident to range controller who reported it to grateful local farmer who's sheep graze (and crap everywhere) the land. You'd think that would have been the end to the sorry tale. But no....., most definately no!

Big board of enquiry about the use of the rifle other than on a range and authorising this that and the other and....... and.......... Huge fine for Officer, fine for NCO and soldier who fired (the order was unlawful.......) Where were we......., ah, yes, shot goose.

Would have been better if they'd just shot the sheep, thrown it in the back of the lorry, taken it to the kitchens, had a word with the cook and...........

Now that was a board of enquiry 6 dead sheep from GPMG fire.
Often was the case, and an inevitable situation there!!:yikes:

Have seen more than a few sheep fall prey to an L96 at Brecon

On quite a few Australian ranges you get kangaroos bounding across the "hot zone", For some reason, they seem to especially like the mechanical ranges with the "pop-up" targets.

Wild horses are a "distraction" on a few, as well, and not just on the ranges, proper. You do not want to hit something with a centre of gravity that high in a basic Land-Rover at much more than walking pace. They can roll up over the front and into the cabin: very nasty.

Many years ago I was party to the "controlled expenditure" of a quantity of 40mm HE grenades via M-79 launchers. We had to cease fire for a while, due to a small herd of extremely casual dairy cattle wandering across our front.

I've been on the other side too....... There was a bit of background chatter going on while a group or REME reservists were on Moody Down range in Hampshire (or is it Wiltshire...?) and it came to pass the one wag had seen a small herd of about 5 or so large deer wander into the range template, about 600 yards away to the left and left of the stop-butts. I twigged on and was left in the invideous position of just knowing what I'd probably do and what they'd VERY probably do if they got half a chance while unnoticed. I thought about telling someone to put a round down close to frighten them off but one of the Sergeants reminded me of the sxxxx over the dying sheep. So I just had to shout down the firing point those immortal words '......I've seen them so don't even fxxxxxx thing about it'. I think that they all ambled off after about 15 minutes
