Way too high? Its a MG and its obviously transferable. The '2' in 'M2' looks like somebody did it by hand, which is too bad, because they didn't have to fake that at all - its a machine gun with a '1' or a '2' if it has all the parts (of course, its a MG if marked 'M2' whether it has the parts or not). At least that's my take on it.

If you are talking about the buy now at $9,500 that could seem high for a Plainfield. Personally I would only want a GI M2. But it's currently only at $905 with NO reserve. And appears to be transferable. Someone looking for an M2 will have a dollar value in mind and bid accordingly.
A seller can ask for whatever they want, that doesn't mean a person has to bid on it, or that they will get that price.
If you look at the front of the receiver, you can see the markings of the Plainfield Machine Co, which made commercial M1 carbines. Until 1968, it was legal in the US for a company or individual to convert an M1 carbine, either commercial or USGI, to M2 configuration. (All NFA rules applied.)
The registered part is either the receiver or the parts kit. In this case, it appears to be the receiver. If the receiver were to break (more likely with a cast commercial receiver than a USGI receiver), the owner is left with an expensive paperweight.

That "2" looks to have been done with an electric pencil. Now that I live in a MG/SBR/suppressor friendly environment, I've looked at quite a few different MGs. $9500.00 is not a lot of money for a transferable anything. I DO agree with Jim in that I would want a USGI and not a Plainfield. POS? I would hold off judgement on that however I would also hold off bidding too ;)

Didn't the CMP have Plainfield B/R for sale a while back? That would mean that they got back Plainfield's from the U.S. Army. I know not a lot but I thought they had a few. Regards.....Frank
It was a converted Quality Hardware, and still on the high side IMHO. There are 3 converted GI's in FL for 6495. but they look beat.

Ya Jim ! The buy it now price, the way it's marketed it sounds like he's selling a WWII Paratrooper M2, which we all know is NOT true. For the unspecting buyer, ??? that's what makes me CRINGE ! He always seems to do well with these auctions, I'm guessing 7K. ChrisQuote:

I have to take exception to this comment, as there is little evidence to support M1 carbine commercial cast Cr-Mo steel receivers being inferior to USGI forged ones. Casting technology has improved since the late 1960's, and if they are dimensionally correct, and meet the hardness MIL-SPEC, then there is no problem. That being said, Plainfield receivers are forgings, not castings. However, I have re-barrelled 4 Plainfield receivers in the past year, and found them all to be below the Rc 38-45 USGI MIL-SPEC. They were all on the low end of the Rc scale, more like Rb 98-102, which is what USGI barrels are. I would not trust a Plainfield that had been converted to fire full auto. Receivers this soft probably won't crack ,but they could warp, or wear at significant points. I have encountered both Winchester and Rock-Ola receivers that were cracked.
The ones the CMP got back came back with the South American carbines that were returned to the Army. The theory was that they had been purchased commercially to supplement the ones they got through the MAP program and not supplied by the US government.
I thought Planfield receivers were castings, and of acceptable but marginal quality. If they are forged steel then I was probably in error referring to it as a POS - and the current price supports this. I do question the strength of the M1A stock to withstand full auto fire, but maybe the buyer has no intention of firing it mounted in the M1A stock - I wouldn't. I notice that many,many of these original, unmodified M1A stocks are split in the recoil plate and magazine well areas and I know jackhammer full-auto fire will place much more stress on these weak points. I guess it boils down to how much money you can aford to throw away on toys. It seems like an expensive gamble on short odds to me, but that's JMHO.
Pretty much all a guy would ever want to know regarding the Plainfields, including the full history and info on the cast receivers is on Jim Mock's website. I was always under the impression that my carbine was a very early one due to only the reciever and barrel being commercial. I now looks to be a '72-'74 ish " prime time " barreled reciever with USGI parts added to it by someone after production. I would like to thank the unknown builder , he made a sweet shooting carbine that is my " knock about " gun , keeping my originals saved for only range trips.
