Underwood disaster!

I was at a neat little gun store in White City, Oregon today and I spied an M1 carbine up on the wall. I asked to see it and it was a beautiful Underwood with original everything! It was really nice and only $800.00. Type I rear sight, type I barrel band, beautiful type III stock and two stinking holes drilled into the left side of the friggin receiver for a scope mount and machined flat! The stock was relieved in the same area for the scope mount. I wanted to throw up! There was not one lousy stake mark of a type II or III rear sight. Oh gawd! ARGGG!!!:banghead::mad:

I have an RSG highwood that had the scope relief in it. It's repaired now and barely noticeable. Luckily it was on an ERMA and not a USGI.

On a nice carbine like that with a good price I would still buy it. If the holes are drilled and tapped through I would take a couple of threaded plugs with flat ends and put the in from the inside . Screw them flush with the outside, use locktight. this helps hide the ugly holes, replace stock. This will still be a great looking carbine. Just my opinion. GK:thup:

Shadycon's right. If you weld the holes in you have to refinish and there'll likely be discoloration. This will be a simple but effective fix. Then the holes won't poke you in the eye every time you see them.

My early Inland has the same issue. It was a NRA/DCM mixmaster gun and as a kid I sporterized it. Nobody cared then, just another M1 Carbine. I have since put it back into USGI trim but it does have a plugged hole where the Numrich case deflector one piece mount was anchored at the front. Still shoots nice, and is a fun toy.

I bet Charlie could re-do the stock. Epoxy or silver solder a couple screw in the holes, cut off flush, refinish, etc. It is savable....

It may be worth saving but not to me. The left side of the receiver has been machined flat. It has screw plugs in it. The stock may not be as bad as I originally thought but the sling well has been modified also. Let me find their business card and I'll point anyone interested that way.

Sometimes bad things happen to perfectly good items. :crying:
I bought it this way and is only for use to repair a damaged stock, but the mockup still makes you wonder why someone cut it down. I hope it was damaged already and someone saved the high wood portion. Not that it matters where on the stock a repair piece comes from anyway. The wood doesn't know or tell.

Back in the day when you could order one from Sears for $25 people weren't so concerned with "ruining the value". I picked up an underwood once that had the rear dove tail milled completely off. It was also missing the front sights. It was in a homemade pistol grip stock as well. I have no idea what the original owner intended with those modifications. I have seen many in homemade pistol grip stocks.
