I generally hear very good reports from CMP but the paper work and all the B.S. has stopped me from buying from them. I don't think you can go wrong. If you are close by one of their stores I would suggest you take a field trip and visit them in person. You can still have it shipped to avoid tax.
5 Garands (SA), 3 Carbines(Inland, Saginaw) , one 1903 (Rem), absolutely no problems. Ordered a SA Garand and received a Greek return that had been re-built, black park and never fired after the re-build. Could not bear to shoot it. So I ordered another and it too came completely re-built unfired after rebuild. Had to shoot that one...rats.. This was about 8 years ago. Made a trip to the North store when there were so many carbines and Garands I honestly started shaking at the sight. Just the experience of seeing such a thing shall remain with me forever. They will begin to dry up, and as it is said they don't make them anymore. I try to shoot a few CMP matches a year and drag one out when I encounter any veteran that come by the house. The look on their face is priceless.
I have bought a M1 Garand, a 1903A3 and a M1 Carbine through CMP and have been happy wit all of the transactions. Also bought some LC M1 and some Carbine ammo through them.
I have bought 9 garands, 4 carbines, 2 03's, ammo, parts. Always very satisfied. One of the
03's was toward the lower end of the description, but that is luck of the draw. The next one more than made up for it. You will do well.

CMP is a first rate organization. Unfortunately, given the increased business costs, including Obamacare, and the fact that it is running out of surplus rifles and ammo, what is left is getting bumped up in price. The M1 Garands currently available are the best deal going, the surplus .30-'06 HXP (Greek) ammo somewhat less so but still not bad. Bolt action rifles and M1 carbines are essentially gone and no more are expected to come in the pipeline. If you at all desire a Garand, get hot now, a Service Grade example ($625 + $25 shipping in a hard plastic gun case) will generally be a quite nice example, the equivalent of which will likely cost you around $1000 or more at a gun show or in a local gun shop. Tune into the CMP Forum linked below if you haven't already done so and note "nary is heard a discouraging word":

Go for it, you won't regret it!
I happen to live about 30 miles from the North store at Camp Perry and believe it or not only make a couple of trips a year there one in the first week of August during the rifle matches to hit Vendors Row but always stop at the CMP store. I have purchased 2 M1's from them an Inland Carbine and a Smith Corona 03-A3 I have also helped several friends pick out their M1's. When I bought my 03 from them I got a can of LC 30.06 and thee man at the counter told me it was one of the last batches of LC they would get as the supplies were dried up. Since they have carried HXP the Greek equivalent of our M2 ball It is still available for 98 dollars for 240 rounds from the CMP. These are the same cans I see at local guns shows for as much as $140. the North store has no 03's or carbines left with no expectations of any coming in. There is hope once the present regime in Washington is ousted that the ones in Korea will return. I last visited Perry in October to pick up some more HXP and they had a good selection of M1's left but talking to a gentleman in December at a local show he claimed he was there the prior week and the racks were almost bear and only the high end rifles left.
Several years ago I ordered 500 rounds of .30 carbine from them and it took several months for it to arrive and it was Aquilia which may not be stout enough to reliably cycle your rifle.
One other side note when I went to pick up my Carbine and 03a3 on a Friday I noticed a 1 ton Dually pickup being loaded with cases of rifles and pallets of ammo and was decidedly sagging at the back bumper. the next day at a show 90 miles away I saw this same individual set up selling the same stuff with at least a 40% markup. $500 dollar rifles for $900-$1000 and at that time a $78 spam can of HXP for $130
once the paperwork is on file an easy purchase I ordered on online and then was in the area of the north store for work and dropped in over lunch since the paperwork for the online purchase was complete I only had to prove who I was and hand picked a service grade Garand good people to do business with and friendly.
I've purchased 4 M1 rifles, 2 1903's, and 6 Mossberg M44US training rifles, plus a bunch of ammo. I would not keep going back if I was not pleased with doing business with them. (And the paperwork is not that big of a deal!)
I just submitted my first order for an M1 Springfield. I can't wait to receive it.
The paperwork was pretty simple.
NO Issues ever, Smooth, just do your paperwork right the first time!

The paperwork is actually the easy part, much harder waiting for your order to be filled and shipped! I've taken the 3 hour trip from Atlanta to the CMP South store in Anniston, AL and handpicked my Mossy M44US. Be sure you weigh the option of having your rifle shipped vs. taking it home with you. Many times having it shipped beats the heck out of paying the 9% Alabama sales tax. I have a '43 Garand, SC 1903A3, and a M44 US from them and not once been disappointed.
I have an H&R M1 Garand (5.58 mil serial) and SA M1 Garand (3.69 mil) from the CMP, both excellent rifles. I just received the SA not long ago. Receiver made in April/May '45, and the rifle was rebuilt in 1965 by SA, with a like-new '49 barrel put on. The parkerizing on it looks brand new, it's so beautiful. The birch replacement stock is a stunner, as well.
Buy from CMP with confidence.
However, realize and accept that not all rifles that come from CMP are amazing and beautiful. Some are battle-worn (or shipping crate worn only) examples that are made exactly for what the CMP is meant to promote - shooting.
Whatever you get, clean that old gal up and oil/grease 'er....then fire away.
Let us know what shows up when you get it :)
I was able to buy on auction some nice four digit 1903's and had the early parts to rebuild them to pre WW1 era rifles. Not worth a lot but I really enjoy them and have shot sub caliber chamber inserts in 32 cal at pistol range distance - they are quite accurate too.
The CMP pays the shipping on auction items right to your door, that is nice service
