30 carbine DA project

Anyone have any input on sleeving the cylinder and barrel on a DA revolver to 30 Carbine and the problems it may present. Would like to have a DA revolver as complement to my carbine.

You might look into modifying only the cylinder of an existing DA .30 cal. revolver, like a Nagant, but I doubt it could take the pressure of the .30 Carbine round. I wonder if it would be easier (or possible?) to convert a .30 Carbine Blackhawk to DA? But the best idea is probably to find a Blackhawk and be content with single-action. You can load or have loaded .30 Carbine designed for the revolver barrel length using a faster powder which results in less of a fireball.

Thinking of a Ruger, S & W or Taurus-something on that order. Would like something in 357 to convert. I think it could take the pressure. Also Ruger SA is kind of big for a carry gun. Last but not least, I (if possible) would like a DA revolver.

Off the top of my head, I think it would be easier to buy a 30. carbine Ruger and redesign the action to DA. At least then you know the barrel and cylinder will work. And you will know the gun will not blow up on you. Or you can buy an Auto Mag III.
Now my father "Big Bubba" is up for the work. $ 10,000 and two years and he can probably do it for you.

A Ruger GP 100 or SP 101 might be a good candidate, all depends on whether they are capable of handling the 40,000 PSI pressures of the .30 Carbine.
Not sure I would be comfortable with sleeving barrel and cylinder though, personally I'd prefer to have new ones made.

Remember they did the N frame in .30 carbine. I suppose you'd like to do a 586 or 686 in .30? Problem will be the overall length of the cartridge compared to the cylinder. Lining a barrel won't be magic, not sure what your end result of the cylinder will be, the closest I've done was a Webley down to .22. I must say the theory was sound, but the practical application didn't work that well. I'd think if you're bound to make liners, the larger caliber would be easier. Say...45 Colt? Then you have room to work...the weight might be worse but you can reduce the barrel a bit and move the front sight back a bit. A 3" pipe would be sweet. The flash will keep your beard from getting too long too...your ejection will need some thought. You'll need to look at the 547 in 9mm. You could make some half moon clips, or maybe modify the .357 full moon clips for N frame guns.

I have the Ruger and AMT Automag. Fun to shoot, but a bit of a flash out the business end.

Thanks to everyone who responded so far. I'm compiling the information and a major concern is the 30 carbine OAL and the cylinder length. My knowledge on the subject is very limited and any and all info is appreciated.

This would be an interesting project just don't expect to end up with any sort of compact powerhouse. I can't speak for the Auto Mag but the ballistics from the 7.5'' Ruger royally suck, 1200fps/350 ft lb ME is about the best one can get with hand loads. That's no better than a 9mm Luger, unless modern propellants have changed things since I had mine.
And one other thing the guys forgot to mention, in addition to having a helluva muzzle blast these things are really LOUD!

Thank you to everyone who responded. It appears that a 30 carbine DA revolver, although interesting may have a lot of issues to solve. As in right cylinder--sleeving the barrel and cylinder--makes a lot of noise and more.

How about converting a Taurus Circuit Judge? Sould be enough metal in the barrel and cylinder of a .44 to sleeve to .30, the cylinder should be plenty long enough and the muzzle blast & noise should be significantly less than from a pistol length barrel. Cost and purpose? Who's to say? But that's kinda beside the point,isn't it? I think it might be pretty neat. ChipS

I can think of much better ways to waste money and time. Even the US military said it wasn't worth the effort or the cost.
