Most of the learned pelicans will get this straight off but was it part of their kit when they went into the field.
Thanks in advance

There was one for sale on ebay a couple of weeks ago
It is a pointer type tool.. a spotter can look through one side at a target and the sniper looks through the other to see the target the spotter sees. Forget what it was called... have seen a couple on e bay
Nothing(?) to do with sniping or a snipers or a riflemans kit.......... It was a training aid used and still used during map reading and fieldcraft training so that the person being trained to give fire-orders etc etc to the Artillery and mortars. So that the directing staff know that their instructions are fully understood by the trainee instructor who.........
Still in use today especially on the JOTAC courses at Warminster. Used to see them clipped to map-boards every day.
I suppose that anyone COULD use such a beast but by the time you have done the map and compass course you'd be familiar with clock-face target location methods. I say 'anyone' but I don't include types such as REME officers who wouldn't even know how to fold a map!
Just goes to show that you can't believe everything you read on an e bay description. Thank you Peter!
Thanks Peter, guess you could suggest the REME Officers do an Origami course that would solve the folding but the reading may be challenging............... besides it cost me next to zip $25.ooAU but it will be a useful aid for me to teach my son rather than go through the knuckles or the degrees from the front sights on a SMLE
Funny you should say that......... I used to take my son out into the open countryside with a map and prismatic compass (they used SILVA compasses at their school Cadet Force until I gave them 6 prismatics 'on loan'/forever!) and use one of those while treaching him to read a map and read the land. He is better than me now. Mind you, that's not difficult! I used to be issued with a prismatic compass, kept it around my neck/in a pouch. It looked good of course, like a mickey mouse watch - but it was really just for the Sergeants to use who knew what they were doing
How many times have I seen people with the map laid out on the bonnet of the Landrover or alongside a 432........ with the compass open and sat on it!!!!!!
The most dangerous thing in the army? An officer with a map!
It is called a "Staff Pointer". Used for map reading exercises and so on.
Officers and specially staff guys in the field with map and prismatic - danger to everybody. I had the compass only for decoration with me. I left these mysteries to the knowing Sergeants.:D
The Officers dont need a map they know were they are going they only need to tell the NCO to get them there.;)
I used to love compass and map reading courses. I particularly liked looking for the idiots who were just sure that they knew better and that the compass was wrong.
I saw them doing it on a friggin' tank once!
Dangerous things:
Officer with a map............AND a pistol!
(SNCO humour!)
Well Brian one would hope they allowed for the magnetic variation on the tank, the most dangerous thing is the one Bruce describes but with ammo as well they think they are surrounded all the time and open fire in any direction that takes their whim!!
Nah..............that would have been an imaginary stealth tank made out of anti armour piercing reinforced cornflakes packets.......no worries:dancingbanana::dancingbanana::dancingbanan a::thup:
Cripes Gil now the Aussi MOD will want to buy one just will not be able to use it in the wet season up North you know as the cardboard would go soggy :D:rofl
Cinders you are showing the weakness in the Aussie system we will get over run by real tanks now and infantry with real guns and ammo. The second line lithgow 303s will have to fill the void again. Are you ready me i have to reload a few more crackers.
Just a question for my Botany Bay Commandos south of the Equator, are your firearms laws as aggressive as ours are here in Pommarania on handguns /Rifles also do you buy the artillery and tanks deactivated or do they remain unobstructed ready for the duck season?
Serious Question this time?
Each state have their own laws even though we are supposed to be the same. I am a Westsider we are allowed pistols for club use only strictly controlled but not impossible. A class rimfire and shotgun open or club use reasonable requirements ok. B class centre fire bolt action SS or 10 round mag max genuine need or club use. Also maximum size under 338 Lap ? . C class semi auto rimfire ,shotgun or CF quite hard but not impossible many boxes to tick one cross and your out. No military look alikes, no SMGs unless deact or MGs unless deact any thing bigger deact. New tanks are welded up solid older tanks etc are runners with deact guns.Collectors cant be fired legally but operational pistols, shotguns, rifles except semi auto rifles military deact,or SMG or MG both deact there is also size calibre restriction in there. Swords and bayonets no restriction
Duck seasons are a sore point
Bindi,
Thanks for that, so in short a bag of nails if you have any part of the Union Flag in your flags make up then.
In some ways that sounds worse than our draconian laws.
What is sad is, it was Micheal Ryan an RFD who started this whole thing off at Hungerford. We are all human and balance on a wall, and all capable of being pushed off the wall in either direction, so that should have been treated in isolation as should Dunblane.
I know those are an emotive subject, but there seems to be no sensible or reasoned solution drawn up by Governments to tackle wild cards, as they could happen again tomorrow!!!;)
Um Bindi I aired my views on the M1A1 refurbs we purchased V's the Leopard II which begs the higher echelons thought process when we have had the crews trained in Leopards all these years we have gone to a new tank that is to heavy for our bridges and I am quite sure some of the old hands would love an SLR more than a Steyr on a lighter note.......
Also Bindi I have lotsa broom sticks with a large bang sign on the end of it surely to deter the most would be's ?????? $5.95/broom at Bunnings, the bang sign you can do yourself and the boondies for the bait thrower you can get out of your local river cripes all of my trade secrets for the world to see.
Cinders if it wasnt so serious:banghead: it would be a helleva laugh:help:
Yep Bindi2 but it is what it is and that's about all we can do is to hope one day those that we elect will see the light and................. well dagnabit best flee the scene as the topic is way off course from the original guess what this is used for ??
