Of photos, necks, chiropractors and MS Paint.

It's surprising how many photos we've had lately that are at 90° to the logical or otherwise hard to see clearly.

If posters could take a minute to two to use MS Paint, which every Windoze user has on their system, to re-orient these photos, and perhaps even crop off the extraneous parts such as their feet, the cat, the dog's dish etc., we would be able to more easily view what it is they wish others to comment on.

Brightening photos, changing the contrast, even inverting the colours (right click the photo in Paint and select "Invert Colors") can also make it much easier to read the entrails.

And for those using Photobucket, Imageshack etc. If you don't want all your photos of your sister's wedding, your wife's cooking or your model railway train wreck to be visible to all of us, then make all your albums "private" and we won't have to endure the temptation to explore your other photos, or sit there waiting for that next photo to load, only to find it's not that mysterious Enfield marking, but your cat's birthday party.:rolleyes:;)

Never could stand the MS Paint thing. Always forget how to use it and end up just ruining whatever. So I use the mad Photobucket editing feature.

As far as surfing other folks' multiple albums, sub-albums or whatever weird sorting they use, that seems like a personal drama! (I don't lock out all of mine, but do use sub-sub-sub albums. sometimes as many layers deep as P'bucket allows!)

F86D drop tank sway brace. Photo shows as uncropped but will likely change after a bit. Seems their editor is slow to update sometimes. Feel free to surf this exciting album...(four-layered "subbed" to the generic bucket that three of us share.)

ETA: Cropping was fast today, less than ten minutes to update.

I crop, and resize all my pics in paint in a few seconds each. Open the pic in paint, take the mousey pointy thing to the bottom right corner and when it turns into a double ended arrow, right click and hold while you drag the bottom and the right side to where you want them, cutting out your feet and the kids eating dinner in one move.

Then go to the options on the top left and click on "Image". This opens a drop box that allows you to select "flip/ rotate" then in the next box "rotate by angle" and "180 degrees" then "OK"

Once it is upside down, take the mousey thing to the bottom right corner again, click drag and drop getting rid of those horrible curtains and the tv set. Now you just have your rifle in the pic. Upside down at the moment so go back and rotate it 180 degrees again before the ammo falls out of it.

If it's still too big, go back up to the menu and click "image" again, this time select "stretch/ skew". If you just use the stretch boxes and type in the same in both, then it will always stay to correct scale. I usually go down from 100% to 60% and then hit save, when it asks what you want to save as, if you add a digit to the original file name (I usually put "a" after it) it will save the cropped and resized pic alongside your original where it's easy to find and does not alter your original.

If you need to rotate it 90 degrees so your feet are at the bottom, just use the flip/rotate option...

There might be easier ways to do all this, but for me, I'll stick to my tried and tested method.

Yep these forums are full of crap photos. At times your flat out seeing a clear outline of the rifle let alone the finer details. Then some will ask you to make comments. Yeah mate **** photos, that's my comment.

One reason that I never sorted the MS Paint business is that I don't have a computer. Have been using random terminals for years.

I use open with Microsoft have the pic on desk top - Rt click on the pic you want look up and see open with - Left click - select Windows 2010 the pic will open up - got to top tool bar and select - edit pictures - a browser will show on the Rt side select - crop drag the black bars to the desired size you want the pic - Lft click OK when you have it how big you want - Click Close top Rt it will then ask you do you wish to save changes - Left click yes and its done.

It takes a bit to get used to but the area you want is usually enlarged and it is a good way to get clarity anyway with practice you get fast at it do them all at once and up load piece of pie just my take on things..:wave:

Left image was a 4mb pic so I used resize to Large web using windows 2010 and Right image using the above method to show the difference pic from a snake handling course we did last Friday 31st Jan snake is a Gwada highy toxic

The most irritating thing to me is that people do not give their camera (or phone) time to focus and then blame the kit!

A very simple to use and understand program that is free to download is IrfanView it has simple resizing options, it will automatically correct the photo's colour / brightness / contrast with a click of the mouse. You can crop the image by clicking and dragging a window around what you want and then cropping it to the window you have drawn. I've used the program for years and its a brilliant, simple program to use. http://www.irfanview.com/

To be honest Patrick, that's where a lot of the info relating to some of this stuff is contained. When everyone, including me, was scratching their heads about malleable 'whiteheart' and 'blackheart' cast iron, I suddenly had a brainwave........... And there it was - in an old 1957 Machineries!

Ok, so you have covered photos and MS Paint, but I don't see anyone picking on necks or us poor chiropractors (with a nickname like mine, what else could I be, apart from a MMA fighter lol) ...

I have several venerable books on technology, because while it is improbable that the last copy of Macbeth will ever be thrown away, historical technological know-how can easily vanish for ever. I hope that one day I shall get round to scanning the lot and making it available on this forum. But don't hold your breath, it's very, very late (or early)... G'night all.

I mention MS Paint only because everyone has it (except Mac users who probably have something better!) or Linux folks, ditto.

Anyway, for those who will download the odd bit of freeware, I can recommend two image programs that do more than the average person wants to do, but don't require a training video to learn to use:

FastStone Photo Resizer: does batch resizes, clear, simple, effective and free.

FastStone Image Viewer: good photo editor with all the necessary and little of the unnecessary.

You can download them from FastStone Image Viewer, Screen Capture, Photo Resizer ....

I use them both in preference to Photoshop and Corel Photo Studio unless restoring an old photo etc.

There was also a "Machinery's" Screw Thread Book as well I have the 1972 20th Edition but the 1st Edition was in 1915. I think the only threads not covered were the Enfield Threads.

Patrick: I hope you get that treatise by Rigby scanned- I'd sure love to see it. That brings to mind a question I've had on my mind for a while: Are there old technical association journals available digitally that contain articles of interest to old gun collectors? For example, is there a British engineering society publication dating back to the turn of the century that has pertinent material and can be accessed on-line? When I research a new project in my chosen field (geology) I drop by the local University library and can access all sorts of obscure stuff from all over the world.

Apart from the buttresses and acme's that are out of the normal, we just take the different threads as just another thread............. Not my thing, as I cut myself using a screwdriver, but I do have access to most of the original early 1900's Machinery’s Reference Books, available in PDF format for download...

If enough of you guys are interested, I'll assemble them all together as a single "sticky" thread within the "Gunsmithing" forum .

:thup:I would be interested as I have my Dads fitting books from WWII deals with metallurgy and the like, but anything like Gil is talking about needs preservation and looks like now days the books days are numbered go ahead Doug I will down load them from this site for sure as will others.

And to have P.L exclaim what a great source of info these books contain is testament to the knowledge they have inside.

Normally, our private files, audio books, magazines and other uploads sent to us are available in the “Team Forum” for Milsurps Advisory Panel and Contributing Members ONLY, but considering the engineer and machinist interest that this thread morphed into, we thought we’d make this particular magazine available to everyone.

Just one snag! I now feel obliged to scan the Rigby treatise - and don't know how to scan a book! I have a scanner and digital camera. The trouble with a flat-bed scanner is that you either press it hard down on the glass and break the spine of the book (120 years old!) or have a fuzzy section on the edge of each page closest to the binding. Usually a bit of both. On the other hand, I could photograph each page individually and dowload the photos into the computer.

The scanning or photographing is not the problem. In both cases, the question is (assuming that my software has the facility to generate PDF files integrated somewhere): How do you concatenate the 100-plus individual page files into one document?

BTW. As we are leaving in a week to give "the Antipodes" a good inspection - a once in a lifetime holiday - do not expect to see any results before May!

In case anyone wonders why I am so nuts about threads, then try refurbishing old percussion and BP revolvers - replacing springs is a matter of course, but it is the threaded parts that screw you! If you have an almost complete set of, say, "Chinese Whitworth"**, then there is a paragraph in Murphy's Law stating that the die you need is the only one of of the set that you have not got.

**I do actually have a couple of Chinese (or Japanese?) marked dies. The one stamped 5.5mm x 0.9 puzzled me until I worked out that it is a dead-ringer for 12-28. If anyone could tell me what on earth 5mm x 0.9 is good for, I would be delighted.

Odd threads in Asia?

The Japanese navy was modeled very closely on the Royal Navy, right down to uniforms, equipment, drill and "traditions".

Their army, however, followed (up to a point) the German model. Then again, the type 38 Arisakas are full of "imperial" threads, including the breech thread. Type 99s are metric. What fun, changing ammo AND metrology in the middle of a war!

Thus Japanese Navy had things like machine-guns that were chambered for a dead-ringer for the .303 cartridge. Thus, THREE different 7.7mm cartridges across the services; rimmed, semi-rimmed and rimless.

Not only did the IJN adopt a lot of British stuff, but the Japanese ship-building industry adopted British practice, right down to the smallest nuts and bolts; Japanese marine engineering was still using Whitworth threads at least until the late 1970s. I don't recall a succession of Japanese-built ships sinking just because they contained "British" threads. (I'm sure there were other factors involved between 1942 and 1945). If it's not broken, don't fix it!

Happy to induce a serious techie thread drift whilst away from computers for ten days or so. Yup, that one is earlier than my earliest Machinery's Handbook. BTW, there's some books on steam other odd subjects squirreled away in the shelves. Including a tome on aircraft construction dated around 1912 or so, I think.
