Hi all. I'm interested to know if the 1907 sling first issued to the L42 was UK marked and was it dated?? Would really like to find one but as it happens I can't even find a picture of one.
Can anyone confirm these slings carried British acceptance marks and were dated. I would expect the date range to be 1970 - 85'ish.
Could be wrong but I would have thought that any 07 pattern sling issued with the L42 programme would have been a carry over from the No4(T). There would be hundreds of them in store and countless thousands of surplus ones available from the good old US of A so I wouldn't see the need to manufacture new.

Cheers, Simon. I ask because I've seen on US websites that 1907 slings are knocking around marked MRT and some with an 80's year date.
Our leather slings fitted to the L42 were indeed taken straight off the No4T's. And they were allocated to the No4T's after a huge stockpile were discovered languishinbg in store at Didcot in 1940! Right up until the old leather slings were declared obsolescent (they were never declared obsolete.....) they still carried the old US Military issue part number. A UK B2/BB or CR number was never issued nor was the B1/1005-99 number issued.
These slings were originally supplied on the P'14 rifles according to the paperwork BUT......... I was told that this was clearly a mistake because they would have come here on M-17 rifles although I suppose that it's a bit academic really. Maybe someone on the forum could add to that! But they were all in store at Didcot where they were found and used
The 1907 sling must surely count as one of the longest-used small-arms accessories?
Definitely Patrick. I think elements of the US military and security forces still use it. Turner Slings produce a synthetic version which has been around for a while now. It's use will continue for many years to come as even if the military eventually sack it it has a huge following in civilian circles. It has the potential to take the title as the longest serving piece of military kit.
I think that if you look at it like that, then Bedford Trucks win the prize by a mile..........

So if one wanted to put on a M1907 leather sling on an L42, then for it to be "appropriate" the sling would have to have brass fittings and be dated 1918 or earlier.

Regarding the stockpile Peter mentions I would of thought these came with M1903 / M1917 rifles that headed this way for the Home Guard, but the dates don't add up regarding the M1903,s and not sure when the first M1917 rifles arrived ? Anyone know what sling the Canadian Ross had ? as a lot of these were exchanged for SMLE,s in WW1.

Were any of the 07 slings you saw issued on the L42 MRT marked? I believe the MRT (Mildew Resistant Treatment) markings began in the 50's. Slings that came on the M1917 would have the old stamped
makers mark and date. Something like HOYT 1917 and then some initials.

If you are buying a contemporary M1907 sling, beware! If the markings look like this, its real
If it doesn't have a date and only says MRT its a fake or if the MRT and date are left to right across the sling instead of down the length, its a fake.
What makes them fake is the quality of the leather, when I shot service rifle several of our team members would buy these at gun shows because they were cheep, within the course of the shooting season a few of them stretched then tore in two. The last company to have a US Mil contract was the Cathey Leather, they closed sometime in the last 8-10 years and Turner currently is the contractor or record.

I have to say that even froim my first day in the Army, 7th January 1963 as a 15 1/2+ year old apprentice earning £2 2s 6d a week we were all issued separate items, noit clipped together. Marty. The only ones I remember, and on mine are HOYT and 1917/18 dates - or certainly from around that time. Even by the mid 70's the slings were all very tatty and oil soaked but they seemed to be plentiful enough. Full of oil because the snipers used to clean them with a stuff called 'dubbin'. In the wet they were awful. Would stain everything they touched, slippery. In fact, useless so they'd simply use webbing slings...., usually a Bren sling. All had dirty brass end buckles

And snake tastes like snake. Specially when it's cooked in an old ammo can. Punch a hole in the lid and use it as a pressure cooker...
Cooked Asian style, chicken is close but they dont come in cutlets or cubes.:D
