"Bubbaized" Inland TH?

I was looking over some M1 carbine parts I received a few days ago and we noticed that the magazine well on this Inland TH was about 3/4" longer than that of a normal TH magazine well. (see picture - "normal" magazine well is on mounted rifle) After a (yet) closer look, there was some definite weld marks, as you can see in the other picture.

Obviously not a GI improvement, but I'd be curious to know what cartridge this was designed? I looked in Larry Ruth's "War Baby Comes Home" and he did talk of a .224 cartridge.

Maybe just a Bubba wildcat project?:confused:

Rick,
I never noticed that....when I went over the pictures you sent. I glanced at that spot and thought it was light pitting from rust. That mag catch and wondering if that safety was a type II or III must have thrown me off.
I apoligize for missing it.
No idea what it's designed for.

No problem, Charlie. It wouldn't be the first time for me, either. I missed it, too. My eagle-eyed friend is the one who spotter it.

You know that there's a matching rewelded receiver out there somewhere with a similarly crappy weld job. :madsmile:

I believe I would put it back like it was - at least it would be of some use. It's a paperweight now.

Jim nailed it.
That was a project I was working on in the 60s. I gave it up when my lengthened slide broke. Every slide I made broke. I went through dozens of slides.
