Shin Gunto 98 information

Could forum members please assist with deciphering the tang on this sword is it an NCO's sword, date manufactured, who made it/who was he/they, significance of the extra hole at the end of the tang.

That is not an NCO sword, it is an army officers sword, a big diff. in the way it was made, both these type swords were made during WW2, IMO the sword in the pic. is worth about $900 to $1400, if it were a NCO sword which it is not, it would be between $500 to $800 at best. If you need more info. I would be glad to help, if I can.

As mentioned by another, this is an officer's sword, not an NCO sword. I didn't see a Showa or Seiki stamp above the mei (signature), so it may be a traditionally made blade. You might try asking at the link below regarding the mei and the quality of the sword (will need some better close-ups for the latter). It's best not to ask about value on this linked site, the members are generally crusty, hard core traditional Nihonto (Japanese sword) devotees and don't react well to what they might perceive as monetary as opposed to aesthetic interest (not to imply this is true about you, but just be forewarned!).

Hi Mil - bloke I am on a different wave pattern I am not money driven but a true collector and would not insult them by even asking for a value it was bad enough on both sides the attrition and carnage and broken homes but now at least 2/3rds of the world knows some measure of peace. But I will chase them up it is missing a Seppa if anyone has a spare WWII one lying around, I am not going to take the handle off as I do not know how to and the pics I have are from the chap I received it from did a swap no money changed hands I will try and blow the Mei up with MS - 2010

Hi Mil this is the best I can do at this stage there is nothing past this except the 2 holes at the end of the tang suggesting in discussions with the previous owner this may be a replacement handle hence the two holes in the tang the mystery deepens somewhat Watson!

I was the one who put a value [IMO] on his sword , I am also a collector and every thing has a value on it, and that includes Japanese swords, and who gives a rats a$$ to what sounds like a bunch of "wanna be monks" who might not react well to what they perceive.

Can you decipher the signature Iboos bearing in mind it has 2 holes at the end of the tang

Hi Cinders,
It is a Shin Gunto [1935-45], prob. made early [some of the early ones had two retaining holes] as the later ones only had one retaining hole and it was forward on the handle [tsuka],
the retaining pegs were called [mekugi].
It is a showa [Emperor Herohetia era] the showa stamp was only 1/4" diameter,
don't know what the 3rd hole is, looks like it was put there later.
You can also get a colored tassel and knot to att. to the end of the handle, the color determined the ramk of the officer, their all over ebay, the org. ones run around $125-$225
but you can get a repo. a lot cheaper.
wish I could help you more on the signature, Their is a ton of info. on Japanese swords on the internet, nice looking sword you have :thup:.

Got the info you required,

Made in WW2, by " Uji Fusa at the Takayama forge which used Yasuki sand iron, and looks like a gendaito hand forged blade.

Special thanks BD-6 and all of those that helped with this project as researching this with the Japanese characters with the many that there are would have had me flashed and ashed before I even got remotely to the origins of this sword, mind you I am still trying to procure a WWII period Seppa to suit the knot can wait. :super::thup::D
