Just got my 1917 back from Miltech

About a year ago I bought a Miltech 1917 on line for a very good price. Unfortunately, it was in 270 Win, and not 30'06. I sent it to Miltech to get it Rebarreled and just got it back. They used a Criterion barrel and I have high hopes it will shoot well. While at Miltech, I found a Parker Hale 5B rear sight in almost new condition and asked Miltech to mount it for me after they were all done building the rifle. This is the result.

And you will to. I promised you all I'd shoot the gun this weekend at the range and I did. Here are the final results. Shooting was done at 300 yards on Range 9 at Fort Meade, MD, from a bench with sand bags front and rear. Except for adding a sling, the gun was exactly as shown in the photos above. I used Hornady's Garand Match ammo, which is loaded with a 168 grain A-Max bullet with a claimed MV of 2700.

Yup, told you you would not believe it. So hear is a bigger view of the target with my last group on it with a one click elevation adjustment to see how much change that would make at 300 yards.

The two shots to the lower right are from earlier adjustments to center the group up after moving back from 200 yards. As you can see, the pasters in the X ring cover the group in the first picture.

Now, if I could just get my 1898 Krag rifle to shoot as well.

By the way, feel free to poo poo the results as either manufactured or just a fluke. I know neither is true and that's all that matters.

Outstanding! No matter which group you look at you should have no probs holding the 10 ring under competition conditions (with lots of Xs). Does the target have a 3" x ring and the PH5B 0.5 MOA clicks?

The target is an MR-63, a 600 yard service rifle target reduced for 300 yard shooting. The X-ring measures exactly 2.75" in diameter and the 5B sight does indeed have .5MOA adjustments.

I don't think anyone here will pooh-pooh that at all. The P14/M17 is well capable of sub MOA as issued and with issue ammo, as shown by Herman Davis and Alvin York in WWI.

It seems like a lot of trouble and expense to get a nice shooting M17, but originals are no doubt getting hard to find with excellent barrels.
