Friend of mine just got this for $600, which is a great price for a none import. The barrel date is underwood 5-44, going by the serial number in the picture I'd say it is wrong, but I'm not too keen on Quality carbines yet that's why I'd like some input. Also, does it look like the muzzle was recrowned ? And what arsenal used AAY ? Thank you gentlemen, and I use that term loosely lol

AA would be Augusta Arsenal. I'm thinking the Y might be the inspectors initial.
Yeah that confused me because I couldn't find AAY in any of the books,
I would guess the barrel should be about a year earlier for that SN.
I think their contract was canceled by May 1944.

Easy ! It's a sweet Trimble high wood stock but I didn't see any cartouches.
Beautiful high wood. The NPM cartouches sre so easily removed. Hard to find good ones.

It has me convinced. The pic of the slide channel shows just a little different detail on the high wood as it transitions into full thickness going toward the tip. That's all I see that would make me want to look closer. I'm not an expert.
Plus there is no carbon from firing it, what a mystery ! Any idea what the H stands for on the bottom ?
I don't, but I've owned a couple of stocks that look unused which went through rebuild. One I had recently went through Anniston and still had the high wood, but no right side cartouche. I don't remember an H on the bottom. My guess is the H is another proof from an inspector or another verification.
That has to be the sharpest most defined Trimble stamp I have ever seen. Seems so new. The 5-44 Underwood barrel is from the replacement barrel contract Underwood had after they finished making carbines. It is a replacement barrel on your friends carbine for sure.
If seen 100's of fake Trimble stamps, the letters are very wide on fakes, this seems legit to me and in remarkable shape !

The Trimble markings I have seen are usually lightly struck. Exceptionally light and hard to see TN marking on the handguards. This looks like someone stamped this with a 20# sledge hammer.Quote:

Just my opinion, but I think you should leave that carbine alone. It looks like a nice, early post WWII re-build that has probably not been messed with. It looks to have been refinished during re-build and will be costly to restore. I think it's a shame to restore fresh from re-build military weapons when there are so many guns that have been through an arsenal more than once or altered since being released to the civilian market.Quote:

I think my point was missed. Your carbine looks like an un-messed with, fresh from re-build carbine. These nice re-builds are becoming more collectable. By replacing current parts with correct manufacturer parts, it's just another parts gun and I think it will lose some of it's history and possibly some value. I would leave it as is, but it's your carbine to do with what you wish.Quote:
