Found this one recently. Weird, weird, weird bolt design, given it's 20th century design timeframe. (1904 adoption date.) Otherwise a nice rifle:

Split bridge to accomodate the bolt handle in the midsection. A late design to incorporate such placement.

A local Portuguese design, as they did not want the Mauser 98. You must understand they turned down the early pre-WWI 98 rifles in favor of their own design. Made by DWM, I'm certain they looked great in 1904. Still seen at the big gunshows, that are an interesting rifle.

Great looking rifle, and I imagine that is a great hunting cartridge, 6.5x58 seems like a Swede with a little extra punch, and Swede's are known for their accuracy!:thup:

Did national pride prevent adopting a proven off the shelf design? It must of been expensive for DWM to tool up in order to make a new design for a limited contract.

Portugal loved the Steyr Mannlicher designs, but it was too much per unit cost.
Designing their own bolt cut out the designer royalties.
DWM must have owed them a favor, or a lawsuit settlement. :)
Sort of like the American car manufactures saying seat belts were a bad idea, until the Volvo gave the patent up for all to use.

Springfield 1903 is a good example of trying to circumvent patents.

Here it is....it's not even drilled all the way through.

The hole drilled in the barrel was a attempt to put in a gas vent in case of the casing rupturing. This was done when they were converted to 8mm Mauser (by installing a brand new barrel) as there was no gas vent in the original design. It is also a quick way to determine if it was converted to 8mm Mauser or not (besides other things like barrel length and the addition of the sight protectors).

Sorry I thought you were referring to the hole around the receiver (where they have the information on the rifle). Looking closer at your pictures I have no idea what that hole on the barrel itself is for.

The hole you are referring to, is the place where the rear sight screw was, before the barrel got re bored and re chambered then indexed by turning it on quarter turn.

My Vergueiro was indexed by even turning the barrel 1/2 a turn.
