This is my P14 that I just bought last month. I am still trying to figure out what all the marks on her mean. Any help with books or websites on figuring them out would be greatly appreciated.

I might be wrong but she appears to be used. I think;) nice to have friends isnt it ?
Very nice to have friends like you  But at least I did manage to get a picture on here.
Not too sure about the P-14 references but if you want the brass disk that goes on the buttstock, SARCO has some in stock last time I looked.
Hows the bore? I really want to get a few of the P-14's
Dan
Dan, thanks for the info. The bore seems to be in great shape, will hopefully get to fire her this weekend, weather permitting of course.

Nice to see a lady on the boards. :thup:That is a nice rifle for a beginning collection. I'm still missing an example of a British rifle for my collection.
ERA means Eddystone
R means remmington
W means winchester
Whichever one that you have will show where it was built
I think Remington was marked RA
Dan
Thanks gentlemen. Mine is an Eddystone. She is marked ERA and E's on all the parts that I can see. Found out she is a Rifle No3 Mk I*. Also has a British Broad Arrow right next to where the regimental disk was. Have a line on some books that might help decipher some of the cartouches. Trying to learn as much history as possible on her. Seems that so much of our WWI and WWII weapon history is being lost and I want my children to learn about it.

Lisa
And this rifle seems to be much worse at lost history than any others, probably because this rifle was solely made by commercial manufactures and with no requirement to keep documentation after completion of the contract. It would seem most of the documentation was chucked out.Quote:
Seems that so much of our WWI and WWII weapon history is being lost
At least Winchester DID keep more documentation than the other two.
Dan
its a nice looking rifle , i could be wrong but i think i caught your post elsewhere and noted a couple books for referance , if not :
charles stratton "the pattern 1914 and u s madel 1917 rifles
and his SAIS # 10 - "303 pattern 1914 rifle"
and for added info related :
c.s. ferris "united states rifle model of 1917"
will give you info , mostly related to the later US contracts
i do beleive your rifle is wearing a US M1 sling tho , needs a proper one you know :>}
Thank you for the infromation. I will have to check those out. I did post on the other forum right before they asked us to come over here. When I purchased her she didn't have a sling so cary m2a let me have that one, so therefore she is not correct. But at least he is helping me look for the proper one.
Best Regards
Lisa
I'm willing to take a whipping for the US M1 sling on LMD's P14. I knew better,
But its a girls rifle and she wouldnt know the difference:lol:
In their current flyer, SOG in Ohio lists a small quantity of Eddystone P!4s for $639.00 if anyone is interested. I got mine at an auction in Greensburg PA last September for $400.00. I don't know how well I did but it is in like new condition and marked "No. 3 Mk. II" on the buttstock meaning it got a new stock to something called a "Weedon Repair Standard" prior to or early in WW@! It ha turned out to be an exceptionally good shooter.

Very nice looking rifle. Just shot mine for the first time today and it was great.
Thank you Cary

ERA actually means "Eddystone Remington Arms". Remington ran the Eddystone plant.
Jim
I have had the luck that I acquired an ERA P-14 a few years back; now I will have the opportunity to acquire a Remington P-14 and a Winchester P-14. A friend has them, and offered them to me.
This almost completes my P-14/M1917 acccumulation. Almost, because the lack of availability of the Savage P-14. I understand they are a rare animal indeed. I have heard of the Savage P-14, never seen one, and I know of no documentation of or for them. Have I had my leg pulled, or what?

I'm afraid so, looked all though my stuff and only 3 companys blt them, the savage co. made the NO. 4 mk 1* for the brits under lend lease.good bit of luck better get them P14s .thats great:super:
"ERA actually means "Eddystone Remington Arms". Remington ran the Eddystone plant."
actualy thats not quite true , the remington plant was owned and operated by a diferant division of remington than that which set up the eddystone , they opperatyed totaly independent of each other and autonimous as to management ,
JISII - nice rifle , and the sling is properly installed as well as correct ...........sorry , had to make that point as too often they are not ,
"I'm willing to take a whipping for the US M1 sling on LMD's P14. I knew better,
But its a girls rifle and she wouldnt know the difference"
no whipping needed , its a decent sling - maybe better than the brits - slap me for that please , i only pointed it out that she might look for a proper one eventualy as she seemed intent on 'knowing' her rifle , id not flame anyone on such , especialy since i once went looking for a rifle for my proper and very nice sling i found , who knopws perhaps her next one will be an M1garand ?
as long as im back here -
winchester M1917
remington M1917
eddystone P1914
https://www.milsurps.com/images/impo...ONETS034-1.jpg
and now i think she may want to seek out the pointy bit as well ?
https://www.milsurps.com/images/impo...ONETS012-1.jpg
Nice rifles. Thank you for the information A square 10. Any information is always helpful in getting to know ones rifle. I did get to shoot her this weekend and she shoots very well. Eventually I would like to get the proper sling for her, but the one cary m2a let me use actually looks good on her :) And some time in the future a "pointy bit" will be in order to dress her up. As for the M1 Garand I also got to shoot one this weekend and I have been looking at them, and will hopefully get one someday.
Best Regards
Lisa
Savage made the MK 4 No1
They didn't make any P-14's to the best of my knowledge.
Dan
Very nice collection A Square! For anyone interested, My P14 shoots EXCEPTIONALLY well with my handloads, Winchester brass, 174 Gr. Hornady FMJ-BT with 40 Gr. IMR 4064. With this load, it shoots to point of aim at 100 yards using the battle sight with the rear leaf in the folded position
thanks , i actualy recently traded my remington for an 1888 mkIV martini conversion , but ill use the photo till i get around to a new one ,
oh and i wanted to add this for lisa - a few added accessories that one can pick up as they are found , the cleaning kit for the buttrap - brass would be most correct for original period of production but the bake-a-lite version would have been common in wwII use

Unfortunately the book on your rifle is out of print.
The U.S. Enfield

It covers ALL the markings, parts, and the accessories.of the P14 and the M1917
Update.
Go to Lee Enfield SMLE specialist Ian Skennerton and order S.A.I.S #10

You can hardly go wrong for that price. and the information is well worth it (including markings)
Thank you gentlemen for all of your help. I can't wait to get the book and look for other accessories for her. She has really helped me learn alot about the history of both WWI and WWII.
Best Regards
Lisa
I ordered my books today from the Skennerton web site. They also still have The Broad Arrow in stock, but not in hard cover. But at the moment you can't use their check out on the web page. But it was easy to call the gentlemen and I just mailed him the payment today. I will be very excited to get them and learn more about my Pattern 14.

Nice looking rifle.
I have a Pattern 14, and it is a neat rifle to have just for the story/history behind them.
It's a shame there isn't more attention given to the P14s. It seems there is plenty of interest out there on the #1 and #4 Enfields and the M1917, but the P14 falls through the cracks. The Skennerton book will tell you plenty, though.
I got mine at an estate auction, where it was mis-marked as a "7.07mm military rifle". I don't know if people didn't know what it really was or what, but only one other person bid on it beside me.
I'm with you on the sling- I have the "proper" one on mine, but I like the US M1 or M1907 sling better as a shooting sling.
Thank you. You are correct about it falling through the cracks. It is harder to find information on a P14 than other rifles. I am excited to learn more history on them. As for the sling, I am looking into the "proper" one. But I do like the M1 sling that is on there now.

I received my books this week, the Broad Arrow and SAIS #10 Pattern 14 and SAIS #1 SMLE:thup: And according to different sites and the gentleman that I talked to about the books, the Broad Arrow did come in hard back, but if you find it, it is going to cost a small fortune. I think the soft back is great. They are great books and have a wealth of information in the. And I think I am going to wear mine out like John:D

Just for your info i have 3 p14s and the Remington is a RE in a circle on top of the receiver. Have fun with the new clunker!
I'm surprised that nobody mentioned to Lisa that her P14 appears to be a WRS WW2 upgrade. It has all the outward visible traits. Lack of a piling swivel, plugged disc slot, removed pointer, and appears the rear iris has been snipped as well.
That is a nice looking rifle and one that obviously served well through 2 world wars.
Remington p14s are marked by an RE in a circle on top of the receiver, have an example myself.
She did go through the WRS upgrade. But she does have the stacking swivel. It is very hard to see in the pictures because of how it was on the blanket. She is also and Eddystone. Very proud that she was in both wars.

Hi Lisa
I see your AF avatar, are you or were you in the Air Force?
Dan
Hi Dan,
I was in the Air Force. From 89' to 92' during the first Gulf War. I was stationed at McChord AFB as a Jet Engine Mechanic working on the TF33 engines for the C141's. Never did go overseas, but I did get to see some shot up engines coming back. Best thing I ever did.
