What NOT to do to a Type 38 carbine

I found this one at a garage sale last year. It was a Type 38 carbine until Bubba got his hands on it. The forearm of the stock was sawn off, the bolt handle was cut off and re-welded, a weird-looking cheek piece was screwed to the stock, and it looks like the receiver was drilled and tapped with a hand drill. It would have been bad enough drilling holes in the receiver, but whoever did this didn't line the holes up. It had two scope bases on it and they were angled off in two different directions. Sacrilege! :confused:

I fired this one when I got it by bungee-cording it down to a bench and tying a string to the trigger. After ten rounds of 6.5mm surplus ammo, it stayed in one piece but bulged the cases a little.

Looks to be Bubba's 1st shop class project...when he was 14yrs old!!

Shame not much left to do anything with.

Now I am depressed.

His skills seem to have progressed by the time he got hold of this one.

My first deer rifle.$15, 40 of years ago.

At least he traded in the cordless drill for a drill press, by the time he got to yours.

The first example makes a Kiber Pass Custom look like a work of firearm art.

All I can say is, you got one heck of a fine action there...................

I can't imagine taking that to the firing point for zeroing. You'd have to do it at night when no one was there...

Jim, That 's seriously funny!! I'm still laughing. I have visions of a bunch of old boys at the range with their M1's, 1903's and M1A's. Then you swagger in with your rifle case, set it on the bench and slowly bring out your --- "Custom Arisaka".---- The looks you would get! I guess I'm laughing so hard because I've really had some similar experiences! (Well maybe not quite that extreme but similar) Salt Flat

TexasCheesehead, OK, I had good laugh over the woodwork. Now I'm looking at what could be done to save as much as possible. Toss the stock, Replace the bolt body and plug the scope holes. You then at least have a complete barreled action. The carbines and parts are getting hard to find and what you have will be of some value. I'll attach a picture of some plugged holes. Look close as they're really hard to see. Salt Flat

I take that back, the last photo is of a T44.

I am in agreement with Salt. Toss most of the rifle... and save that receiver with careful welding/ plugging. I have done it... so it is possible...

Just noting that all 6,5 Arisakas seem to have generous chamber diameters. So don't fret over the bulge. If reloading, neck size only.

Do let us know how the project is coming along.

I'm guessing the stocker was not apprenticed to Holland's or Purdey then?

May have been but after seeing his initial project I am quite certain he never advanced beyond scrubbing toliets.

These are pretty hardy rifles though, here is a picture of my Type 99 before and after I got to it (sorry for the slight thread jack). The Arisaka rifles tend to be worth the effort to restore overall, you would be surprised what a new stock and a couple of parts can do for one.
