One Springfield 1903 authority, I believe it was Lynn Meredith, told me that all the NRA Sporters that he had seen with holes drilled for scope blocks, that he considered the work of Springfield Armory, came with both sets of scope blocks holes on the barrel. The 1922M1 Sales Variation rifles came with scope block holes on the receiver ring and barrel. On these rifles the holes in the receiver ring were spaced much farther apart than those shown in the photo. In my opinion the scope block holes pictured were not done by SA. I have learned never to say "it was never done at SA". You referred to factory but I think you meant Springfield Armory. I suppose it could be called a factory as guns were manufactured there.
As Herschel noted, I have a Springfield that SRS letters as being drilled for Winchester scope blocks, and the receiver was not drilled. Block sat just ahead of the receiver on the barrel.
holes look to be to close together..
The hole spacing looks to be about right for a Weaver #55 base.

This thing has come up again! The price has been reduced substantially. Is it just a shooter at this point or does it have some collector value? If so what price range would you think is reasonable? Right now the price is at $2800.

With the two aftermarket holes, apparently for a more modern scope I would look for one or two more holes in the bridge. The blue looks to be original and not worn. It would make a nice shooter. I would be somewhat interested at $1,400.00.

After many years of reading and managing our forums, I've found that Herschel has been been more accurate and up-to-date as any of the contributors i know of....
If you can get it between $1000-$1400 it would be a fair and good price. I wouldn't pay a penny more than $1400 on the high side.
