Impulse buy.

Did a flying trip to Penrith for a gunshow, I had pre ordered a couple of rifles and was picking them up from the dealer.
Naturally enough I did the rounds of the stands, a shopping list from club members to fill, when I spotted this one, A 1912 BSA converted? to a .22 Target rifle. not sure if it was a Milsurp action, as I just secured it and the other pickups at home and headed straight off to Brisbane for the Queens, so will get to check it out in a week when I return.

Unusual insomuch as the bracing to the butt, all drilled and tapped, the sights......new to me and basically why I grabbed it, the nice floorplate job, not a rough job, the forewood, not a milsurp........just a downright interesting piece and at $250 Oz a pretty cheap sight that I don't have. Pity the sight stops the bolt from being removed.


Also grabbed a 1922 Lithgow and a 1943 Lithgow, both fullwood, so along with the two I had to pickup, I came home with five SMLE's. The joys of running a collectors club. What I don't want, the lads grab.....thats when they aren't trying to pinch them without me noticing.:lol:

That is a very interesting piece. I find that bracing on the wrist quite the touch. Nice find!

That backsight defies mechanical comprehension. A case of the old '....where there's a will, there's a difficult way' Reminds me of my pal who wanted to make a gadget that he could fix to his hydraulic jack to lift the whole front of his Mini Cooper. You couldn't believe this thing. Whistles and bells, rings and knobs......... All it really needed was a bit of half decent strong wood with a block at each end on the top and a round bit on the underside to make the gadget sit square in the jack!

Is it home made Muffer? Any maker apparent?

Those side plate things look suspiciously like door hinges...

PL, no not homemade, pretty classy actually, it might have info on the base, but won't know until I pull it off.......and yes, definately an overkill.

I looked at that rifle and thought for the price it was a great buy, I almost bought it early on saturday morning but thought 20 lee enfields is quite enough for now in two safes

Home again and stripped this one down.......gotta say I'm impressed with the work.

No info on the sight though, that will take a bit of research.
I will take this one to the range next Saturday, just to check it out.

Got some range time today, gotta say I was impressed, did a couple of zeroing groups at 25m.

Then out to 50m to try different ammo, only had high velocity stuff though, these barrels seem to like standard loads, but in OZ, unless you are into .22 paper punching, most of our usage is HV.
Attachment 55730 50M Winchester Bushmen HV, Attachment 55731 Remington HV, Attachment 55732 Winchester super speed, Attachment 55733 IMI Civic HV.

I guess I'd better lash out and pickup a box or two of target ammo, might even give it a run in my SHT. 22 and No.2 Mk.IV, got nothing to lose and heaps to gain.

What about trying the cheap but reliable CCI standard velocity ammo?

Fascinating sight that. Quite an intricate lost wax (?) casting. Can't have been cheap. Someone was aiming for maximum rigidity and minimum backlash presumably. I wonder who made it.

Picked a lousy, windy stinking hot day though, but at 50m the old girl was looking good.

Blew up into a dirty big storm just as I was about to try the No.2 Mk.IV, apologies for the out of focus shots, wind was blowing the target around.

Very nice and interesting Muffet - I'll bet you get lots of offers to 'take it off your hands'.

A couple of points - I have an ersatz Nr. 9 with AJP barrel sleeve, produced by a couple of villians, passed through police hands and set up for alternative original/scope/target/4T use(all without altering the original!). A vaguely similar sort of exercise to your rifle.
1. A crude atttempt was made to produce a similar looking rearsight using an anshutz smallbore rearsight.
2. It seems to shoot best with CCI Standard - they also extract better - for some reason the better target rounds bind up in the chamber.
3. Question? - mine commonly groups 4 in a very tight group with the odd 1" flyer at 50 yards. Several of yours have done the same. I dont profess to be a good shot but comments anyone??

These smallbore target trainers can be hugely enjoyable.

MUffet nice rifle and different, always nice to see different conversions of 22's

I think we discussed one of those sights on a different rifle a few months back? Someone was aiming for zero backlash and as close to absolute rigidity as they could get. No "mucking about" with side plates or two screw mountings either: 4 screws into the rifle body! I suppose it at least eliminated the backsight as a variable in accuracy!
