New to Garands - New Rife

I've enjoyed looking at milsurps.com the past few years. I finally decided to register an account due to a new Garand purchase. Being new to Garands, I don't know as much as I would like. I did some looking through the posts the past few days to gather information about my new purchase. Thanks members and posters for the great information to get me started.

I purchased this rifle a few days ago. It is a 44 SA with SA parts mostly of 44 vintage. Barrel is pitted but bright in spots. The rifling is good with some muzzle wear. I paid under retail (prices for a post war mix-master average 1200-1600 in our area) from a local LGS that gave me first crack at this one. The parker/mag/blue whatever is dark but all the same throughout the rifle. The stock has been sanded lightly but enough to remove the cartouches (faintly see the correct period markings). I took pictures of all the parts I could find numbers and stampings on. No import stamp on this one.

Please let me know if you have any more information about this one. Does it look to be original, refurb, etc. I love the history of milsurp firearms.

From what can be seen in the pics it does have some correct parts there are some that are not correct, follower rod, op rod, hammer .
If it has as you say "faint proper cartouche" it is fake as it should be a SA/GAW and it appears to have a post war IHC stock

Thanks for the information. I noticed the difference in parts dates according to the frontier site but I could not find information on whether a difference in dates for some parts is normal, as in the case in some other milsurps.

I don't know my stock profiles. The cartouche on the side of the stock looks square but maybe I am seeing things. Today in better light it doesn't look much like a square at all. No P on the bottom. No cannons. It maybe it is "correct" as it can be.

So... The next question is this a rebuild or a hobbyist assembled rifle? How do you tell? Is this one more desirable as it has a number of correct parts or is a rebuild a rebuild in the Garand community?

Definitely a shooter. We'd need detailed pics of small parts to be able to tell if they are correct for that rifle. And THEN, it may have been assembled...

Okay, what do you need to see?

The rifle will need to be completely stripped and careful pics taken. There are numbers on each part that you'd need to show and the wear also tells stories. You speak of an inspector's mark...even the buttplate would need to be shown.

Great. I'll see what I can do with taking this apart. It looks a bit involved. CMP has some good pics of diss.

What is the finish on the receiver? I read a number of posts on what this could be.

I thought I was getting a decent deal on this one with the parts I could see. Most Garands available from retailers in this area are Post-War Springfield and HandRs. Should have went with CMP and ended up with the same thing and saved a couple hundred. Its a nice rifle regardless.

If you paid a grand for a Garand, that's a good deal. This rifle's in mostly pristine shape, even if the parts are a put together. It won't hurt it as a keepsake and shooter. The finish is Parkerizing.

Since the rest of the rifle parts are SA... should I trade the IHC stock off for a period correct SA GAW stock? In doing a little research it looks like the IHCs are hard to find this looks to be a 52'. Do these IHC stocks bring a premium? I tried looking around a bit but could not find any active listings of these stocks or period SA GAWs to compare.

A George Woody will cost you lots...by comparison. What mark does your have? A DAS mark? Or is it something else? I still think the rifle may have been restored by someone with parts that are close to the right age. They seem to be back and forth a bit between a bit too early and late, but that's not a very hard fast rule for assembly at the factory. Besides, there are others that will know more, as you say, at least they are SA parts. More important, does it shoot? Have you tried that yet? I'm not sure you need to change the stock anywayzzz...
