M1 So you have a rebuild ?

Well finally got what i wanted a local seller of an Inland '45 M1 Carbine. Well i was already told i took a bath. I paid no more than 950 for not just the rifle which shoots Wonderful, but a full ammo box to the top with 30 carbine rounds, 4 very nice USGI mags, Utica Bayonet, ALOT of parts (all marked) i mean i was skeptical at first and thought this would be the case, but i can get my money back, so where do you start to get this almost close to '45 period. After i got kicked in the rear for this Carbine. I think i got a little buyers remorse. I know you meant well and didnt beat around the bush, but i feel like my teeth were kicked in. LoL
I wish i knew more about photography and angles and where to shoot, i just have this cheap cell phone.

Well, maybe you didn't take a bath...exactly...with all that ammo included and a pile of part. You can't believe what just anyone says...I guess these guys will sort us out soon enough. Maybe you can sell some of the spares for a little re-coup? Shoot the p*ss out of the carbine...keep the brass for reloading, or sell it to reloaders.

How much ammo is there? That would be a couple hundred $ here for that. The bayonet might be another hundred...maybe...

What date is on the barrel and what serial number. The adjustable rear sight and bayonet lug are probably original to weapon if it is a 1945 build...

Well so far my wife and i Stopped at 300 and thers more, the barrel is dated 45 and the serial number is on one of the pics but its in the 6 mil, range, plus 2 canvas bags 2 stock pouches which are probably repro, plus i never seen an oiler that looks like this, the bottom looks like the lead of a 45 round 2 oilers marked II with a circle. I had to stop for awhile with this and the storage i found a nice Springfield Armory Stock and handguard today

We'll need some better pics once you get the chance. Then we can have a better idea. I still think that ammo is worth quite a bit. How much is there? You say you stopped counting at 300?

With a 6 million serial number, the barrel (depending on markings) , band, and rear sight probably are original to the weapon. The leather handled bayonet is worth at least $100, too. I think you did well.

I tried to take a picture of the barrel but the flash covers it. I'll take it outside in the daylight to try it, but it says

on the Magazine Catch has HI.... theres so much, but that very sweet Springfield Stock i found in that storage will look very nice
that Chestnutridge Ridge Supply...(Dark Walnut) Military Stock Stain with a hint of red just came in Today.
Now i have to find some videos on YouTube to , learn how to apply inside and outside, then it says for best results use boiled
linseed oil, so i hope there is a wood working thread here. Thanks

I would say the rear sight and barrel are original for the Inland with that serial number. The barrel band was for a late Quality Hardware, but who knows, might have been shipped to Inland when Quality production stopped. Maybe someone with War Baby can look it up.

Looks like a hand stamped M 1. Common on 6 mil serial #'s.

Well, 500 plus rounds ain't cheap. We're slowly working towards the deal being not too bad. Like I say, I thought it was just a carbine and bayonet...try turning the flash off on your camera and use a bit more ambient light...

You did well. With about $300 in the ammo, bayonet $100+ depending on if it has been re-sharpened, 4 used mags $60+, that puts you around $500 for the carbine not counting the other items you didn't show. I would consider that a good deal.

Thanks Jim, that's what I was waiting for. Hard to judge a price from a different country. I'm curious, if you lay out the spares parts, what there might be that's actually valuable.

Here is one of the date and just a few parts, but most are wrapped up in a plastic type FULL of grease, im not even attemping to open and clean it, its s mess, 1 is an Operating Guide Marked HI and just a few parts i cleaned this morning. Also found a Stock and Hanguard marked S A in the Storage yesterday and that Stain came in from Chestnutridge, im going to put this Inland in it when i finish it.

The early band could be worth good coin and the oilers might be worth a bit depending on who made them.

2 are II with circle and 1 is... IS, I have 3 parts soaking theres so much grease 1 is a Operating Guide.....Oh well, when I reifinish the Springfield Stock and put the Rifle in, I will keep it awhile and maybe i will sell it here for 800.00 or 900.00...I will just list all the other stuff and Sell the ammo to Pistol and Rifle club somebody will buy it. Early this morning i Shot 30 rounds with no problems, Thanks

Great News !!! Sold all parts, the 4 + 1 5 Round mag, The Army Box full of ammo, both Stock Pouches, and Canvis Rifle Bag, The Sling and both Oilers for 500.00...WoW !!! I feel alot better. wwhheewww!!! I Just kept the new Firing Pin, and Flip Safety and The Barrel Band. Thanks

YEAH I KEPTED IT....I have half of Case of S & B and 4 boxes of Fedaral.Thats one thing i didnt need was ammo, but since he threw it in, I took it....I dont have that upset stomach feeling any more....LOL ! Thanks

Im not even finisned....i have 2 recoil plates 1 marked DI and the other PI there both Inland just found out the DI is the one for a '45 and a friend offered me 45.00 for the W marked recoil plate, but im keeping the screw with the X on one side, i was told not to get rid of it, Thanks

I had a box like that of AR stuff. Everything you'd ever need for builds or re-builds. Sold the whole works when my last M4 went. I was never going to have one again. Now, I've had this M4gery for about 7 years. Wish I had those small parts now.

Trade, i have parts not just orginized, i did buy a storage from a gunsmith, but what i dont have are 2 GI issued Operating Guide Springs i Can really use if you lf you need something, i have some nice Springfield Armory Stocks if you like, by the looks of it you can build another one your carbines.Thanks

(JetFixer14) take on the M1 Inland '45 Carbine...I thought during the last months or year, they started to use Pot Belly Stocks to Convert them to M2's. Thanks

What is the mark (if any) on your front sight? I would not want to remove a front sight if it all possible.

The Sight has an N and the one now has, well i dont know but can't figure it out, this a friend gave me one. I already change out the recoil plate that had a W on it, and the ones i had one has a DI, for this Inland,

Show us a good picture of your front sight, someone here will be able to figure out the marking. Does it look like a Z? - Bob

Yeah, just post us a couple of pictures of the front sight from different angles. Like I posted above, I dislike the idea of taking the front sight off f these guns to "make it right." Besides, the sight on your Inland could be right going by the serial number you seem to have. I know that Inland was getting ready to change over to the "r" sights (Rudy Furnace) about the time your carbine was made.

As far as the N being a Z, I thought they were all Niedner sights with a letter orientation issue.

But theres no Numbers and i heard the samething it could of been another number, so im going after that also. This one lokoks like its never been touch, but i have a diagram i posted, it checked out okay.

Typically we don't swap out recoil plates when we probably don't know how to hang a carbine in the action in the first place. Its more important for it to hang right than it is to be 'correct'. Here's how you do it; put the action into the stock by hanging the receiver tang under the recoil plate lip. Recoil plate to be firmly attached, not loose. Action at this time should be hanging high in the stock, barrel well above barrel channel. Smack the buttplate of the stock to 'settle' the action; it will go lower and lower until the barrel settles just barely above the wood in the channel at the same time as the whole assembly makes a different sound on the last strike. At this point you should be able to put the hand guard on and slide the barrel band into position without pushing down the barrel. This is a 'text book' assembly that you probably won't find on one carbine out of a thousand today. If the barrel ends up too high or if it falls into the barrel channel right away, the recoil plate and receiver tang need to be fitted to each other. You never want to force the barrel down into position so the band can be installed. The band barrel clamp will hold a 'loose' fit barrel up off the wood, but the action will move around when shooting. Its much better when everything is naturally in the right place.

When i changed out the R P i installed the barrel with the receiver loose before i even began to to tighten and i was jerking down the barrel while it was hanging on top, then i saw that the barrel was barely lying down in the the stock channel then I tight slowly to kepp the angle of the action and barrel even, cause. Mt first attemp i tighten the action part first and saw that it was not level, so i redid it but didnt smack the buttplate lk, e you said but this time it laid down levall and it sat in the stock even then held down without force and kt laid down and i slowly tighten recoil plate and this time the screw did not protrude ouside nut it sat in there like it did with the W Recoil Plate. It tighten fine and it was level and the screw stayed right where it was with the other recokl plate, Thanks

I'm not up on who made fabricated front sights (SA? RIA?) if at all during the war.

It is probably too late now but when you remove the original recoil plate, it will leave a fingerprint in the stock if it was the original plate. The machining marks etch right into the wood.

I had 2 different DI recoil plates for the '45 Inland and 1 didnt fit like the 2nd DI I used and the second 1 i used fit just the the Winchester Recoil plate did, it looks like the W one by the pictures i took before and after. Then I went to the P & R Club and shot with the same group, now I have the Type 3 Barrel Band SI the one for the '45 and the N marked Front Sight.

But remember, its not going in the same stock, its going in the newer Stock im buying with the matching Hanguard with the same markings or the Springfield Stock im refinishing., so the finger print in the stock doesnt.matter, Thanks

This is why im not worrying about finger printing, I purchased a very nice Inland Stock with matching Handguard and Markings and plus im working on that SA Stock, but just started. This is the first level, im applying the Walnut Stain right now, then i will follow the rest as im going through the AGI DVD on Wood Working 2 hour Course on making a nice Walnut Stained Stock that I forgot I had. This is '45 M1 Inland on a Sprinfield Armory Stock and Hanguard with almost all parts Inland most are IO and will have the final 3 parts for a '45 in a week.. (Im NOT saying this is a correct and all to the year) I also purchased a M1 Stock and matching Handguard marked IO, but thats for another day, then this Springfield Stock I did will be for sale, Thanks to everyone who helped me, Thanks

What camera are you using Frank? It doesn't need much for a digital cam to get good shots. Just something with a macro...it would help for doing this sort of thing. They're OK, just not quite as good as you'd want...for detail.

Yeah your rignt, but it has already been determined to be a rebuild anyway, so i guess i wil rebuild it so more, i already got the front sight marked N and the rear sight Marked PI , but it was only 350.00 after selling all the 800 rounds of ammo and alot of parts and the 5 mags.The next one i buy i surely will know more about than this one, just glad he gave all those extras but the best thing of all it shoots awesome, no problems, Thanks

And better yet i just sold that Springfield Stock and Handguard from the storage i bougjt from that gunsmith on ebay for 140.00, that will go in the pot in buying another Inland. Which i already found and have my eye on it its a 44 Inland hope when we get together i see more in it than that other i lnland 44 that i see here and is POC.

I was going through War Baby and got to the section of what your Inland parts and marking should be and i took apart my Inland '45 and was amazed when you do your homework what you find, im glad i was told to buy this book and im surely glad i bought this rifle that after i sold those extras it was 450.00, i think i will keep this rifle, i was going to sell it.
