The Bridge at Chalons (1963)


The squad faces elimination by Heer troops and even worse, an ultra-caustic demo expert who refuses to let Saunders guide their sortie behind German lines to destroy a bridge. The 2 battling Sergeants trade icy glares, and contrary orders, while the infantry try everything to avoid combat with Nazis because the dog-faces must put eliminating the bridge above all else. The explosives noncom's unending contempt bruises even the calloused egos of Saunders' combat vets. Which explodes first - the bridge or the mission ?

I wonder if that is how he really carried his M1 rifle when in the Marine Corps?

Back when actors were actually worthy of admiration. If Lee Marvin is in a movie I like it.
I doubt many soldiers wore Rolex submariners.

He was the real deal, went ashore at Betio (Tarawa)

Bob, I can't find any info of him at Tarawa. The only thing I found was regarding the Battle of Saipan.

Shot in the butt-ocks on Saipan..........

I saw an interview with him many years ago and IIRC the interviewer asked him if he really participated in the invasion of Tarawa. Again IIRC, he said it was actually Betio, one of the islands in the Tarawa atoll. Can't believe I'm misremembering those details, but I suppose it's possible.

I Co. 3 Battalion 4th Marine Division was at Kwajalein and Saipan

the 22nd Marines Regt was at Eniwetok - WIKI - Naval bombardment of Eniwetok began on 17 February, and the 22nd Marine Regiment, commanded by Col John T. Walker, landed on Engebi Island, on 18 February at 08:43 the next day.[1]:69-70 Resistance was light, and the island was declared secure by 1450, though mopping-up continued through the next day.[1]:70 US losses included 85 dead and missing plus 166 wounded

When I was at Marine Barracks 8th & I we burried Lee Marvin at Arlington. Also, while going through my uncles stuff (1st Marine Parachute Regiment and then 3rd Bn, 26th Marines, 5th Mar Div) we found a picture of a fellow Marine who was a dead ringer for Lee Marvin. I'll have to see if I can find it.
