M1 Safety
Okay...I was reading in the Book in 45 possibly 2-45 they switched to the flip safety. I have 1-45 6,78x, xxx with the push button but also the extra parts i was given has a Flip Safety inside the bag, could anyone weigh in on this. If this information is incorrect im sorry, but thats what i have, also i was in another forum and i was discussing this and was told it changed in late 44. I have the flip safety that came with the M1. Is there a site or maybe here on assembling or disassembling. There had to be a reason this part came with the M1 and if it was on there i would like to put it back on, Thank You

The push safety would most likely be correct for your carbine. The flip safety didn't start with Inland and Winchester till about spring 1945. A bit after your carbine was made.

The Inland Section On page 352 in War Baby says Type B (Rotary) used from Mid 1944 to end of Production, before that it was Type A was Push, Thanks
Then if the book was wrong i'll put it back. I have '45

There is misinformation and misleading information in just about all the books published. The mid 1944 date would be when it was written in for change however the push safety would not have been scrapped just to bring the rotary into use. Remember that rotary safety would still have to be produced and shipped also. Think of the thousands of push safeties in the assembly area bins. They'd use them up before bringing in the rotary or try to anyway. It is even quite possible that a mixture of the two was in use simply because of the FILO/LIFO factor. The spring of 1945 as Bruce posted would be a more realistic time frame for the standard use of the rotary or "flip" safety.

There are safeties, & then there are safeties. Frank, sounds like you are ready to invest in a book. Let me suggest "US M1 Carbines, Wartime Production" by Craig Riesch. < $20.

Great suggestion Neal.
Just remember there are many mistakes in Riesch's book but it makes a great pocket reference when at gun shows. Most of the mistakes can be easily corrected with notes in the borders and plank spaces.
Larry Ruth's books are probably the best source of information that is mostly correct. Down side is it's kind of difficult to stash War Baby in your back pocket when at the shows. ;)

Thanks Neal, thats one book i haven't bought yet, i already bought 4, but its sounds feasible that the order to changed was in that time line but not changed physically, but when i bought the rifle the guy told me " i have the flip safety for it that i took off and its in the bag" i was looking on Google image just to take a look at some 45's and there mixed, some with it and some without it, but since im never going to sell MY first M1 wartime rifle not including my grandads Winchester. Mine is 45 Hand Stamped 1 and all parts ive compared to a couple of books i have, i think i will just leave it there, its not going to any competition, but im very familiar with it since ive had my 78 Iver my dad bought back in 78 had a flip i got used to it, but Thanks Everyone for the help i really appreciate it. Thank You Guys
Frank
Note: The information i read was Larry Ruth's Book War Baby, thats where i saw they had used flip safeties in mid June '44 till end of Production mine is 1-45, I just thougt that War Baby was good source about this information. Thanks

You know when i got BIT by the M1 bug May of this year i didnt have any information about what to look for, i just wanted an Inland and found one for sale here about 40 miles from my house. It looked good, came with so much and over 800 rounds of ammo a utica Bayonet. I think for my first buy it wasnt a bad one thanks to the fellows here telling me about it when Bill showed me how to post pics, but im always looking forward for some positive feedback and help, Thanks

When you read the information in War Baby or any other book you have to realize what is being said. The flip safety was finally approved for use in 1944 but it took a long time for it to finally get into production and that was later in 1945. One has to read all of the information and not just parts of it.

Frank, You've probably got the 2nd printing of WarBaby! One thing I've learned about that book is to always look at the "Errata Sheet" which is about 2-3 pages in from the front cover. This will show corrections that apply to several errors in the book. I looked there first for the answer to your question about the flip safety - and didn't see anything. Then, I checked in WarBabyIII which has all the corrections known (at the time of printing) for both of the first two books. On page 1144, I found the correction for your reference to the safeties on page 352 of WarBaby! Basically, it says to cross out the the words "mid 1944" and replace them with "mid 1945" until the end of production. Hope that helps. - Bob

Bob, its on page 352 of the War Baby Volume 1...... So i went to JustAnswer dot com and bought 7 question of anything to ask and i went to the Gun and Rifles of WW2 and ask it as my first question and it said they replaced to flip safety. They were already been makimg them and when the push ran real low they switch and should have EI or HI.., but mostly on M2's, but i know y'all know more thats why i bought 4 books and read most of the day cause im moving on to another. A friend of mine is selling one at the Pistol and Rifle Club, he wants to buy another type of rifle and ask me if i was interested. Now when we go meet i can take tools to open it and look around before i buy, but this guy is like y'all he knows alot about M1 and alot more other rifles like Jim. Ive ask him to join and he said he will. Thanks
