But while watching tonights episode of the US series Homeland this 'covert' sniper rifle was uncased by a crack FBI agent in the field (picture taken before scope was mounted).
Its nice to see that the secret service of our American allies, even with the most modern of Ordnance at their disposal would rather rely on the trusty SMLE when it comes to the crunch

I,ve seen a lot worse, to be honest if something like this is made up from a sporter/parts etc then I,m all for them at least they go bang..... the folding stock looks familiar with one that a company in the US was producing or was going to produce to fit the Enfield, can't remember the name as they didn't ship outside the US, at the time I was building up a few .45 Cal Enfields.Quote:

Considering a good no4T v a modern Barnard action doing 1/4 MOA or better.....um I'd pick the latter all else being equal especially if the ammo is as old as the "T"!
A shoot off between my L42 and my F/S Barnard over 3,4,5,and 6ooyds mmmmmmmmmmm. To be fair the glass on the L42 needs to be as good as on the Barnard then all bets are off. The HT, T and No3T using hand loads would be close. Pity the last 3 are not new to see just how good they really were.Quote:

Still haven't had a crack out of my 3T yet. It all looks to be in very good condition, so expect it to shoot better than I can. I'll use the poorer scope of the two, if it fails I'll find as good scope as I can that will fit the rings and see what we can do.Quote:

Some of the rifles that are being built out here now days would fit into the air drop class. The sniper does the same wind/mirage readings the target shooter does the only real difference is the transport and ETs or manuals don't shoot back.Quote:

Skennerton signed my Armourers Perspective "1st shot off a cold barrel is what counts" pretty much sums up what a sniper is faced with and if you have read the book Marine Sniper Carlos when he elliminated that General from @800yds I think early morning from a cold barrel after that marathon crawl to the FP is a mammoth achievement, that crawl it is unbelievable but he did it and thats that.......
Cinders: Yes, that's a good read and amazing story. Also amazing was the part where Hathcock and spotter pinned down a VC squad for a day or so in the middle of a field. Sometimes the sniper rifle has to function as a quick firing repeater also (ie normal infantry rifle). I just finished the autobiography of Bruno Sutkus in which he lists and briefly describes all his kills. I haven't tallied it up but I would say the majority were in the 100-300 yard range and often during prolonged actions (as opposed to the single shot from concealment). The Sutkus book is unusual, by the way, as part 2 describes his unbelievably horrific time in Siberia post war.
