Information on my Lee-Enfield please

My grandmother is letting all of us grandchildren have a gun from my deceased grandfather's impressive collection. I had a great choice to choose from, there was the British .22 trainer, the .308 Winchester that I am an excellent shot with, and of course there was the gun I ultimately chose. My father is upset because he thinks it is ugly and holds no value what so ever. As soon as I held this rifle I knew it was mine, do not really know how to describe the feeling. It has an issue where if the stock is pointing down it will lose its bolt, my father has it currently because he is the one who wants first shot just in case it blows up. I am curious if anyone can give me information on it. The only numbers and info I have are:

*White letters on stock 5BN 65
*S No 4 MK1
*Stamped US Property
*Magazine is not matching numbers, but everything else appears to be
*I believe my father said the serial number was 99c8104

hopefully in the next week or so I can get over to my dad's house and take pictures. I really do not care about value due to the fact it was my grandfather's rifle. Just facts would be awesome! It is beat up looking, and like I said the bolt falls out when held in a certain position but I like Ugly Betty, my father not so much.

You have a US property Savage arms .303 service rifle. Good choice. I seriously doubt it will blow up as it's sounds like it's fired more ammo than you all collectively have seen. They're strong and reliable and if you look through the threads here there's a plethora of info about Savage rifles...

Welcome to the Milsurps Forum. Congratulations on your choice, a No4 Mk1 made by Savage, the well known US arms maker. and supplied to British Commonwealth forces during and after WW2 under the lend lease scheme. Cant really help on the stock markings, 5th Battalion 65th division ? but I dont think they are front line unit markings. perhaps used in training, reserve or home service. The bolt problem, is the bolt head clipped in to the rail on the right of the receiver?

No-one here will think its ugly.

With thanks to Advisory Panel member Lance, there's also a rare "all correct" 1942 No.4 Mk1*(T) Savage Sniper Rifle (less scope) (click here) .....

Lance's article, accompanied by a detailed 165 pic photo montage, speaks to this example as being one of approximately 3,400 Savage rifles converted by Holland and Holland and re-barreled with an Enfield 5 groove barrel, however, it was never fitted with a matching No.32 scope.

You said, "if the stock is pointing down it loses its bolt". Do you mean the rifle bolt falls out, or the stock bolt falls out?

So Ugly Betty is in my possession! I will take photos of her later today to upload them onto my photobucket account. Me and my father went to the range Sunday and I had the honor of shooting her first. At 25 yards, after 5 rounds, I started tagging the bulls eye in a group the size of a quarter. Bad thing was, I had to aim far right just to do it. It shoots way left so now I have to find a sight tool or make one myself. 50 yards I started tagging the bulls eye again, just like the 25 yard mark. 100 yards, well I am going to have to do like my father did with his Enfield and put up a monstrous piece of cardboard just to figure out where the bullets are going. It is going to be fun though, I really like how this gun shoots. On the left hand side of the stock in white letters is the 5 BN 65 then on the right hand side of the stock are faded white numbers that look like 248. All numbers except for the magazine match. On the rail there is a chip missing which makes it so the bolt slides off the rail easily but my father has a guy who can weld a piece to fit the chip if I want to do that. Bolt is surprisingly smooth though, and I was racking rounds as fast as I could. I think I may have found my military shoot competition rifle! The old SKS really was not the weapon for me to shoot for the competition because it got me way to excited and 15 seconds into the rounds I was the first done. My father also passed down to me his prized 1939 Tula Mosin with all numbers matching and none of the numbers struck out. Also scored bayonets for both rifles. I am going to make charcoal shadings of the marks on this rifle also.


By the way, it was really hard for me to type correctly when I first made this post because I had a cat on my head and a cat in my lap. Please pardon all my foul ups :lol:

Well not really to sure, it was just what I was told by her. There are enough guns for each grandchild to have 4 a piece. I am thinking she is going to keep the left overs in case she needs the cash she can sell the remaining guns.

Right now this is all anyone is going to get, I am now going to take and throw both my computer and cell phone in the street so they can meet their demise! Took me over 4 hours just to get both to agree to disagree and upload pictures.


I forgot to mention earlier about the handguard. It is really loose, you can grab it and move it a hair. My father says this is normal and nothing to worry about but it does bug me a little bit. I have a book coming about how to disassemble this rifle so that I can get a clearer look at anything that may be hidden.
