Hello! Need help identifying an old Enfield

I have not posted here for a long time. I'm back because someone just gave me a rusty old rifle that I think may be a sporterized Enfield, so here I am with some pictures. I hope someone can tell me what I have before I start to taking it apart and cleaning it.

Looks to be a British made, 1944 vintage No 4 Mk 1 rifle; although the safety lever is Canadian.

I'm guessing it might have been made at ROF Fazakerley.

You have a pile of scrap I'd throw in a bin....

Says it in the first picture, No4Mk1. Hammer is cocked.

Fella that gave it to me says it fires -- he was brave enough to shoot it once.

The bolt works perfectly. I'm in the process of lubing it up and getting some of the rust off now.

'Gator "adjuster"?

Or really slack owner?

I've seen a few (mostly SMLEs) like that in North Queensland; sad, really.

I'd say it would be a miracle if the pipe is ok on that one. If it isn't, I wouldn't bother doing anything. Scrap it out.

Suggest have another good look at picture #2 ...

There is a bolt-head catch, and no cut-out in the boltway - therefore it is not a MK 1*.

Since North American production by 1944 was all Mk1*; the clues indicate a British rifle

A closer look at butt socket markings in pic #1 shows part of an ''M'' sticking out from under the rust next to the DOM and a ser. no. that starts with a 1. It's a Maltby. ............Or whats left of one at least.

Looking at the photo original size, I can see the "M" now. Serial prefix letters seem to be "BS"

Rifle has ROF (F) FTR markings

To see original size, I clicked on picture in post. When this opened in new window, then bottom RH corner clicked on zoom icon (next to BUY green box), select original size this gives a very nice enlargement.

Gearheads love to find items like that to bring back - epecially if its not locked up. I would have it in a tank of evaporust without its wood (about $30 per gallon) and let the enzymes eat the oxide away leaving any original finish and then release all the parts for inspection etc..would love to see "after" pics

I agree, don't waste your time on a sporterized rifle with a useless bore. So check the bore first before worrying about looks. Some very, very, thorough cleaning is required.

There's something amiss with the front sight anywayzzz, it looks like a No1 Mk3 front sight, is the barrel uncut?

We used to see big old Savage shotguns and No4's/5's like that. Not as bad maybe but they'd had a hard life in the constant rain and humidity especially if they'd been on the East side, in the mangrove areas. But they'd be stripped and sent through the workshop plant and come out in perfect condition. A bit pitted of course but now corrosion free for the next year or so. As has been said earlier. Providing that the barrel isn't a sewer pipe and passes the gauge limits - or accuracy test, it'll continue to give good service.
