What going on with this 1903?

Alright guys bare with me as I have zero knowledge of the 1903 rifle. I've wanted one for a while and i was out checking the local pawn shops for ak's and ran across this 1903 springfield. Mid 800,000 serial number. Over all the rifle looks amazing except for one thing.
The rear sight looks kinda goofy, well at least i think its the rear sight. I thought these had a ladder bar rear sight. Also whats with the area thats flat and has the stud sticking up, i thought thats where the rear sight was on these.
They are asking $500 but will take $450 cash out the door.
Before i go buying this id like to make sure the rifle is correct and not bubba'd.

The military sight has been removed and the rifle has been buffed and reblued

Biohawk, The original rear sight assemby has been removed and a lyman receiver sight installed (nice sight!) Yes it is Bubbaed. The markings on the receiver ring have been overly polished and the metal reblued. The pluses are the Lyman 48 sight and the high no, serial (Double heat treated receiver) would make for a good shooter if the bore is good. Looks like a wannabe NM but the rails are not polished so doubtful. Salt Flat

The markings on the receiver are actually really nice, and i honestly don't think the gun was reblued. The pictures are honestly horrible and don't give an accurate view of the markings or finish, that shine your seeing is glare from the pawn shop lights. It was ridiculously bright in that shop.

Looking at the area where the original rear sight went, do you see any reason i cant put an original back on?

Is it honestly even worth $450?

Biohawk, Yes you should be able to easily reinstall the rear sight. Fortunately the windage screw is still present.

You should check your serial number with SRS as it is in a group of known US Navy serial numbers

Biohawk1, If your looking for a shooter, I think that rifle would be great. I have a Remington 03 set up like that. I bought it in a scant stock but changed it out to a C stock I had. Fun to shoot and you can use either sight depending on your mood or whatever. I have to take the ladder sight off if using the Lyman as it interferes with the sight picture.

Is the rifle still in military configuration, except for the sight change? How is the bore? Stock unsanded? Stock stamps?

$450 would be OK, if the bore and stock are good.

Not listed in SRS, although a lot of rifles in that range were with the USMC.

i didnt have a light to check the bore but from looking down the muzzle i didnt see anything bad that screamed out to me. stock looks great unsanded, didnt see any markings on it though. yes still in military configuration.

The price is right. The Lyman sight is nice and has worth. Likely a nice shooter.

Biohawk1, as Salt Flat stated the receiver has been polished and blued. I, like all the rest, would love to see better pictures of the complete rifle.
