Y'all never looked at this old thread? (Never mind, having found it it's understandable why it's not obvious...):
Picture heavy thread (My GEW98 was feeling lonely)
(An early photo thread of mine with bad title. Tried to correct the title after the fact, but it didn't take. Just became a header for the first post, sorry!)
Note that Badger has an Imageevent entry on a mud/dust covers. See the link in the old thread (Post #8) or just click below:

Great find. To be honest, I wouldn't even have known what it was if I had seen it.
Note that 99% of those turning up, are fakes. They were once made, of an extremely high quality and even marked with an original manufacturers marking. I have an original one myself, but only knows on it for being original, since it was found in a chest on the bottom of a lake.
How can you tell if it is original or not is there certain things to look for??
Just ask yourself if a thin metal cover which is probably 100 years old can be in such a good finish .. or make a metallurgical examination :)
To be more serious: I believe the original finish was rather glossy, highly polished. The manufacturers marking should be rather deep.
The main reason I got the rifle was the overall condition of both rifle andcover seemed to go together. The action under the cover has much less oxidation, and the stock under the cover guide clamp had old discoloration.
