Hello,
I've been wanting a Krag for a while and haven't found one locally and I saw this one on Gun Broker: Unusual US Springfield Krag Model 1898 30-40 : Curios & Relics at GunBroker.com
I guess i'm wondering is this thing even salvageable, and is there anything to know based on the pictures posted. Any help is appreciated.

There's a few parts there that might be OK but as a whole I'd leave it. That is to say, I wouldn't actually pay for it. Just about everything's beat and there's lots of rifles available for decent money if you wait a minute. They'll likely have a good barrel and good wood too. That one needs everything.
Wow! That Krag must have been carried by the Color Guard in a Mardi Gras Parade.
It would be a neat challenge, if it was 'Free', to make something out of it.
Free would be nice but I'd maybe go $75.00 f I needed what parts there are that are salvageable .
As mentioned. Be patient. There are much, much nicer complete examples out there.
The way I see it you should tell them to give you the $75.00 + shipping just to take it off their hands!
P.S. What a sad fate for a Krag rifle.

Of course i'm not gonna buy it (not at that price, anyway). I guess it just caught my attention because of its poor state (i feel sorry for the poor thing). If I got it for say 50.00, I might have tried to salvage it just to do it. There's almost enough parts on Gunbroker alone to build a whole krag. I might write them if it doesn't sell and make a low offer.

I don't think so. The bolt would almost fetch that if sound. Some of the parts might add up to that. The gun as a whole wouldn't be worth trying to resurrect for that though. I doubt the barrel was anything at all inside.
I can't believe that thing actually sold. ANd for over $200! Sucka born ever minute.

I guess it all depends on how badly someone needed parts and what it was worth to them. If ,say, someone was given a family heirloom that needed some parts, then they have a cheap Krag that is hopefully now complete and functional. Or if someone has a missing or broken bolt, then they might have figured it was worth it to get the gun functional again. Plus there would be other parts on it. Depending on where you are, these things aren't on every street corner.
If on the other hand the buyer is planning a restoration on it, then I think it was not such a wise purchase.
Looks like someone paid about three times what it is worth. Looks like a loooong project. :surrender:
I just took a look on gun broker and, going by parts prices on there, there is about $450.00 worth of parts on this gun and that excludes the wood. Of course it's hard to say what the parts listed might actually sell for.
Or what shape they're actually in...
And, unless the buyer chimes in here, I'll guess we'll never know if it was bought to restore, to part out, or to complete an existing rifle.Quote:

I guess none of this should surprise me. I also watched a krag action with full length barrel, bolt, and trigger go for 330 on eBay. The only thing missing to make it complete was front sight blade, rear sight, stock and stock hardware. I'm guessing because it's an interstate sale of a 'modern' firearm (post 1898) and has to go through a licensed dealer. (Also, as an aside, it violates Ebay policy).
But is it considered a firearm? They probably looked at it very closely and just slid past the definition, or it wouldn't have remained there.

In the U.S., the post 1898 receiver is treated like a firearm (BATF rules, not Ebay's, is what is important).
As far as the site it was sold on, wasn't it on gun broker and not ebay and I believe the listing said it has to go to a licensed dealer.

I think you are confusing two different guns. The first gun that was painted (OP) was on GunBroker, the second gun without the stock was on eBay. It doesn't say anything about going to an FFL holder. I think he had another one listed also.
I apologize for that. I thought about bidding on either one, however the poster's talked me out of number one, the other one i posted was due to some side discussion on braking up krags on ebay or gunbroker (i didnt bid on the ebay one because knowing by luck i'd earn the wrath of the BATFE)Quote:
