Vegemite sandwich holder. There are photos out there concerning this issue.
I'm going to say marmite sandwich storage, it's a Lee Enfeild so it deserves the better product :p
To put your wallet in when coming ashore so it doesn't get wet.
Thank you to all that have contributed so far.I thought I would get a bunch of meaningless suppositions instead of the insightful comments presented.
It's for cleaning supplies...and whatever you wanted to put in pertaining to your rifle. What did you think?
Thanks BAR for your reply. My uncle had told me that it was for a cleaning kit. There has been a discussion on CGN lately that it was for 60 round bandoleers?50 rounders, boxes of 48 rounds, pack of smokes, ETC ,ETC .I would just like to know if anyone actually knows what is the purpose of the pouch.
Assuming you are talking about the web or canvas rifle valise and not the leather scabbard ... as far as I know, no one really knows what the pocket on the side is for. There are just a lot of guesses.
I BET that the actual answer WILL be told/found in the equipment regulations and or the manufacturers contract and/or the instructions issued for the use of the equipment. It WILL be there, in that position and that size for a reason.
I remember wearing '44 pattern kit for years and years without really thinking about why things were like this or that. Only in the 80's when I found a small WO Booklet, issued to quartermasters in the mid 40's did I read about the reason for the looped thinggy or the webbing flap on the wotsit etc etc
I've only seen one pic of a crew goin' ashore with a rifle in one of those cases. It would be an out of contact admin landing. It would be a case to keep a rifle clean during transit.
