Choice of 3 modern rifles.

Right I want a new 200m plus shooter.
(covered 200m range 10 min walk from the house)

At the moment the choice is

Tika T3 in .308 or 7-08
Rem 700 in .308 or 7-08
win M70 SPR in .308
all are new
so I prefer the M70. Like its feel the weight it sits right and its bulk. but will be expensive to complete wit scope.
the tika is the best quality, stock a little thin for me.
but I can pit an A.I stock on the 700. Little old now, but the cheapest.
I like 7-08 but it is more expensive than the .308.
I have a 7-08 but no .308.
I live in France so no permission necessary to buy any of these.

Remington 700 everytime for me I'm afraid, T3 close second. The 700 has a great simple and proven action and a consistant rifle to shoot as long as its been looked after. Trialled many times by many countries as a replacement sniper rifle in its hay day, so I'm a bit biased. The Tika is still used by many UK Police teams.

The T3, Remingtons quality control is non existent or has been for a few years now judging by the number of returns and recalls from down under. :bash:

Are these older guns or brand new? If new I can't say anymore. If the gun is a bit older, good used, I'd go for a 700 Remington BDL deluxe varminter in .308. I had a BDL deluxe for years and it shot as well as the varminter for me. I had a varminter in 5.56 as well and it shot little ragged holes at 100M but at longer ranges the bullet reacted too badly to wind drift.

Thing is, all your choices are excellent guns.

I have been doing a little maths. costings on all new items.
As I think the 700 stock is rubish and the AI replacement pluss the cost of the 700 is going to be the same as an out of the box M70 SPR, this may be the way to go.
The Tika, still not sure,
The armorie that is selling all the guns recomends the Tika 200 percent over the 700 on quality,
his words and he is ex special forces and still traines snipers etc.
But I am still edging towards the winchester M70 SPR.
or to find the extra money and get an A.I. in .308.

There are a couple of ways to go here. One is something light for hunting (think carrying a distance). Any of the above would do. It would only be a matter of which felt best to you and you preferred for any of a number of reasons. The other something 'Walt' (as in 'Walter Mitty') would have. Then, the Tikka T3 Tactical might be an option.

In the end, it is your money and that means bugger everyone's opinion YOU make the choice.

I had forgotton the SIG SSG 3000. .308 in the right price range.
I have had the scout in 7-08 useless for other than a single or 2 shots.

Beyond military style rifles like AR's and AK's, I have not seen many rifles made in the last 30 years that didn't look and feel like junk to me. Fit, finish and quality simply is not what it used to be. The one exception are the Savage rifles with the laminated stocks. And oddly enough, these are generally quite a bit less expensive than the Remingtons, etc. Only new rifle to replace anything I carry is a 17 HMR Savage bolt action. All my others are for the most part older than me and I'm 50. My rifle of choice is a Savage 99 and they stopped making them a long time ago.

Agreed the Remington furnisher is not the best, but dont forget there are many useable alternatives out there to fit to make this a cracking "all round" rifle. As we don't know what you intend to do with it, it is difficult to give an opinion. Don't forget opinions are like ar**holes, everyone has one.

Savage, one of the dealers I have been looking at sells mainly modern Savages.
A friend bought a 17HMR stainless savage 8 yrs ago and had always had problems, mainly feed ones. They did make very good No 4s during the war. It is now part of ATK.
I do prefer olde arms for many reasons,
but feel I need a modern gun, my eyes are not what they were
and any advantage I can get is a help.
I still keep looking at a winchester M70 SPR, just like the feel, it is just right,
but Winchester is now part of F.N. and therefore it will be done right.
I dont normaly add U.S. guns to my collection, I do have a in 95 30 30 classic Browning design and
an M1 Garand that was hidden away with a K98 since the war so is just untouched un is a faceanating piece of history. These have been my exceprions.

I currently have three of the modern Savage rifles, two in 17 HMR which would not suit your needs at 200 yards and a 243 which I have never fired. I had a fourth a 30-06 which I also never fired.

I have seen numerous complaints about the accu-triggers on these but I have never had an issue with either of the 17 HMR's and both have performed extremely well and are extremely accurate out to 100 yards which is about as far as I've shot them. The first is a bull barrel stainless, the second is a light weight stainless with thumbhole stock. When researching the "problems" with these rifles, it always seemed to come down to someone trying to adjust them further than they were designed for and then complaining they don't work. So long as they were kept in the designed range, people were not having issues with them. I personally think they are great.

Never fired the heavier calibers because I basically got both for free through Cabelas points and just set them aside. Sold the one. Other is up for sale or trade when I get around to it. I don't hunt deer with bolt actions.

For the money, I think they are a very good deal but would advise you to try one out before committing if you can. Remington's in comparison are nothing but a name and a name isn't worth much getting a bullet on target.

Managed to talk to a friend last noght,
He is recomending the Tiaka, but we both feel that the stock is thin and not heavy enough.
Are there any replacement ones out there? I have not seen any.

Lots of bits for the Tikka rifles, many of these rifles are solely an individuals choice.

The Tikka T3 Tactical is a very nice rifle for the money. Very accurate right out of the box. My friend has one that I've shot a few times and the factory trigger is wonderful. The bolt has a nice smooth, precise feel. The only thing that is a bit fiddly is the magazine insertion. I guess it just takes some getting used to.

Ruger take the prize for that I'm afraid

TIKKA very nice weapon.Savage not pretty or pricey good value. Perhaps Ruger American is worth a look fine rifle for the $.

Been looking alot into the Tikkas,
found the T3 sporter.
It crosses into so many areas.
Hunting, Target, benchrest, moving boar, ready to take silencer and break.
underside rail for proper slings,

The Tikka sporter would be a good choice.

Tikka T3 Tactical or the sporter or the winchester M70 SPR, all in .308
is looking like the choice.
The Police here have chosen the T3 a,d have ovet 2.300 of them.

No one on here has said anything about the Winchester M70 SPR. Any thoughts.

With silencer, muzzel break, bipod,
with the Night force bench rest scope 12-42 x 56.
same package as the Gendormerie. except for scope.

Having owned and hunted with a Win Mod 70 SA in .243 for the past few years, I'd go for the Winchester. I'm seriously considering selling my beloved 308 Sauer 202 and replacing it with a Mod 70 in 308; but I just love that Sauer too much at the moment.
(Whoops, just noticed the post that says you plumped for the Tikka. I'm sure you wont be disappointed with it)
