Another new member with an old carbine

well almost new,,I posted awhile back about a p14 and got such good advice I decided to try again.. I just fell into a pretty neat Rock-ola carbine,,its has a lot of rock-ola or R marked parts but I am curious about a couple things so I will give a quick rundown of what I have.

Receiver ,barrel, round bolt , front sight, gas piston parts, are all Rock-Ola , all Trigger housing and group Rock-ola except hammer
I did not take bolt apart so I do not know about internals,
stock started life as a Winchester but someone got sand happy and removed all cartouches, still has Winchester recoil plate and butt plate
handguard is a 4 rivet marked HI so not rockola
barrel band is marked looks like MMD,,BUT could be WWO
Hammer is in the white and marked LTP
Slide is marked capitol U with top marks or omaga symbol cant tell which, has p in square and 7160091,, any idea who made ????
REAR sight is where I have another question ?? I was told not original,,it is a type 2 milled with PI on the side,,Problem is,,the only steak marks on this sight to gun,,NO OLD ONES
One of the experts at the GunBroker forums told me it was a '' mutilated gun'' AND HAD NO VALUE, I am disabled and pass time tinkering on guns so it makes me no difference ,,I still wish to know if the rear sight could be original, who made the slide, and barrel band

Welcome to the forum! Great folks here, with lots of good info. Nice Carbine. Been mix-mastered a little bit, but the front band looks interesting. Is it a Type II, or a cut down type III? A type II band and Type II rear sight would be correct for your weapon, IIRC. Those would be original to the weapon.

Whoever told you that your Rock-ola has no value is a moron who knows nothing or was hoping you'd possibly sell it to him for "no value." 6 million series Rock-ola carbines are very rare. It sounds like your is fairly original by what you're saying. The slide was made by Packard for Inland. Does the rear sight have an H in a shield on the right side? Rock-ola used Hemphill rear sights in their 6 million range. Your hammer could be original after all. LT-R or LTR would be Ludlow Telegraph for Rock-ola. Go back and look at the hammer again with a magnifying glass to see if it's a R and not a P. The barrel band could be a cut down type 3 with the letters you are describing. I think they may have been MMQ, or something close to that. I hope I helped you somewhat. Nice carbine!

Barrel band is 100% type 2,,it has not been cut or had the bayo lug removed,,it never had one, The rear sight has me the most stumped,, the only marking on it is a PI stamped on the right side but if its been changed whomever did the work was great because it only has 1 stake mark and the lines match to a T, Its a good little gun,,I shot it today and it run like a dream, the guy I was with had a muzzle gauge and its a hair under a 1, I think I will hunt up a proper slide just to make me feel better and keep it at that,,maybe sometime in the future I may try to find correct stock , handguard and recoil plate, ,,I did go back and you are correct,,the hammer is marked LTR so the entire trigger group is correct,,,thanks

Could you show a picture of the marking you say is on the barrel band? I just want to verify to make sure. Rock-ola used a type two barrel band with a single slash and from what I hear a few with no markings at all. Thanks

that band is MMQ, and because it is marked MMQ it is, IMO, a cut down type 3 barrel band, not a type 2. When done well it is very difficult to tell.

PI marked sight was produced by Packard Manufacturing Company.

That MMQ barrel band started out its life as a type 3 barrel band with bayonet lug. The lug has definitely been cutoff at some point as there were no MMQ type two barrel bands made. You still have a very neat carbine though with quite a few original parts. Enjoy it! In fact I wish I had it.

Thank you all for the help..Many firearms I know but honestly I have very little knowledge of any of the m1 family of firearms,,I was always more into bolt actions. I own many Mosin's,,I have 2 standing here on my computer table I have not even cleaned the cosmoline off of yet and my youngest son took his first deer with a 1917. Now that I know the trigger housing and all internals are Rock-ola I need to have to get brave enough to take the bolt apart to check the firing pin , extractor and ejector,,this journey has been fun THANKS,,,:rofl:

I don't think anybody answered your silde question. But I think what you have is a Inland slide. You don't show it that I have seen. But if the U is on the outside bottom and the P in a box is on the inside bottom of the box. I think what you have is PI with a line under it and that would be a Inland slide.

hey, if it helps make it easier I can get two Mosin's for you and trade them for your Rock Ola, what a deal!! 2 for 1!!!:D

LOL ,,Thats about how I ended up with it,,I had a Mosin sniper that I had bought years ago from Rguns, Guy kept wanting it, even when I explained the Rifle was real but the scope was most likly a repro, He still kept bugging ,He brought the carbine by the house wanting to swap,,claimed it had been in a closet since his Grandfather died in 1979,,as filthy as it was it could have been true ,I think it had not been cleaned since it was built/rebuilt,,I swapped him,,figured I would not get hurt on the deal since I only had about $600 in the Mosin

Nice carbine and mostly original. Apparently the only things boogered up on it are the barrel band and the stock. That cut-down band would irritate me to the point of spending what it would take to get the right band on it. I'm guessing you could do it for around $200. In order to change them out, the front sight has to come off. You need the special sight tool for that and the process will leave marks on the barrel in front of the sight. Another alternative would be to replace the Type III bayo lug band. At least it then would be in the same configuration as when it was last in gov't. custody. Still requires pulling the front sight.

Thanks,,I guess I'm odd or its because I have never collected carbines but what I am looking for next is a Rock-ola slide,,its the only internal I have found not correct and I just want the guts right , after that I will work on the wood and band,, I already found a rock-ola marked recoil plate so thats a start,, I honestly appreciate the help in here, other places I posted I got responses from it a mutilated gun and has little value to one guy that I guess is a purist and HE was MAD because I slowly wished to put it back as close to original as I could and was telling me I was being dishonest to change it. everyone needs a hobby,,I have too many Mosins and this new project has been extremely fun.

Definition-PUREIST=A person who has to have everything original and untouched and does he shoot only correct military issue ammo? The weapon has already been modified so it is not "original" anymore. People change parts all the time to make these carbines more as issued.
Change a few parts and have an all parts correct carbine and 'ENJOY', great looking and sounds like a great deal!!!!!!!!!!!!!GK
