Arisaka Type 99. No mum at all not even ground...?

So I bought an Arisaka Type 99 from a local gun collector for $200. I was looking for a cheap gun to take hog hunting in May. Anyhow the guy that sold it to me told me it was chambered in 30-06 but there are no markings indicating that. So the action seemed solid and clean so I took it out and shot it once last night. It shot nicely but Im still nervous that it might not be safe to shoot in the long term. As you can see in the pics it is a Series 5 from the Nagoya Arsenal and as far as I can tell it was made in 1943. My main question is about the lack of markings on the top of the action. From what you describe it's be re-barreled or re-chambered to .30-06 and scrubbed. What we call sporterized.

We've seen a few that really do look completely void of the chrysanthemum but have been carefully and would seem professionally machined off and refinished. Obviously the Japanese didn't do it that way but for some previous owner the look of a ground or "Xed" out "mum" was too much to bare. Yeah, pictures are a must ;)

I havent figured out how to post pictures on here yet but I can email some to anybody that wants to see them. And yeah I know it was stupid but I just couldnt help myself lol. Another thing I was curious about was that there isnt any markings whatsoever on the reciever not even any model mark of any sort like is on every other one Ive seen.

Seller said it was chambered in .30-06, and I`m sure that if it were still chambered in 7.7×58 Arisaka a .30-06 would NOT have chambered & fired in it !................

Totally understood that. But he was going on the advice of someone who didn't sound 100% sure himself of what it was chambered in. Not getting on the guy, but it's not a really smart practice to go off discharging firearms that you're not completely sure about. As I understand it, the South Koreans were given Arisakas that were chambered for 30-06, and those reportedly weren't very safe. Correct me if I'm wrong on this. Just be careful out there guys!

Seriously though, good point about the S. Koreans. If it is it will have the cut-out on the receiver, Nick, is there a nick taken out of the top of the receiver?

As far as I can tell nothings been cut out of the reciever. Do you have any example pics so I know what to look for? The reason I felt safe shooting it was the fact that the action is very smooth and it locks tight. It seems like the conversion was high quality but it would be interesting to know who did it. Im fairly certain that the US military didnt do it since those are always marked as 30-06 and I dont think the Koreans did it because there's no sign of it being modified for a stripper clip.

That's not the lug, It's the guide for the ejector directly behind the left lug.

My post was sarcasm, like in earlier post I never heard of the Arisakas that were given the South Koreans that were chambered for 30-06, and were reportedly very unsafe. The one I just posted does`nt look unsafe to me & it is a South Korean Type 99...........

Oh I see, we were on different pages.

A lot of South Korean Arisaka rifles were converted to 30-06 but they are not unsafe to my knowledge. A lot of Arisakas have been converted to 30-06 over the years. The action is one of the strongest made. A 30-06 would not chamber in an original chamber. Not sure an "unsure" previous owner would stop me from firing a 30-06 in it if that's what he thought it was and it fit. What else would it be at that point? Not many standard rounds larger than a 30-06. I'd put it on a lead sled but I would fire it.

Then again, I wouldn't have bought it in the first place so the point is moot.

Ran into a guy with a 308 Arisaka at a gun show yesterday. Wanted $175 for it. I didn't have the heart to tell him he didn't have a prayer in the world of getting that for it. Butchered stock, ugly, weird flash/recoil end cap, bent bolt, etc. Only thing it had going for it was an unblemished mum. The guy who looked at it just before me did tell him it wasn't worth much.

I believe also the Thai and the Philippines had the Arisaka rechambered to .30-06. Probably they also removed the Japanese property marking.
