Bovington museum tiger day

Pride of place to picture 8. The well tried and battle tested Centurion. So said, the most tried and battle tested tank in the world including the T34 (or the upgunned version). Is this a fact or just urban myth?
-
Peter,
It had the desired effect on the Russians and exuded confidence in the battle field and looked the business. Not sure we would have come off best against overwhelming odds of 6 to 1 though!!!!!

The Tiger Tank
Like they said in WWII send 4 Shermans to get a Tiger odds are 3 will be nailed before the last one can ram one up the pipe of the Tiger. It may have been an over engineered piece of kit but when General Bernard Montgomery forbade the use of the words Tiger Tank in any reports lest it cause Tiger Phobia that says something. I for one would not want had to have faced one in a Sherman, Von Rosen of the 503rd Battalion said the Firefly did not worry the Tiger crews unduly. The latter Soviet SU series was a threat to them with their 120mm+ guns. You cannot take away from the GA that early on their kit was pretty damn good.
-
The Israelis apparently did well with their Centurions back in the day when they went up against the Egyptians and their Soviet kit. What was that, the Six Day War, the Yom Kippur War or both?
-
The Israelis have had a rolling programme of "updating" armoured vehicles since day one.
Sherman with a 105mm gun? yep.
The M-51 variant sported a diesel engine, E8 type suspension, even wider tracks and a serious gun. They saw service in the '67 caper and again in '73 in the Yom Kippur war.
Many were either sold / traded to sundry south American countries, converted to SP artillery chassis or re-purposed to other auxiliary uses.
A lot of "ex-Egyptian / Syrian" etc armour (no warranty expressed or implied), was recycled using the power-packs and track systems for the US M-60 tank as well as L7 main guns (where they could be fitted), "Blazer" reactive armour etc.

JonnyC, were you an IDF Centurion Tank man or an APC man?

So there may be 2 going where is this one Bruce in Russia!
-
The Elefant in the room!
Different road-wheels; similar to, but possibly not the same as fitted to the Tiger ll in appearance.
Any ideas?
And for REALLY rare, here's a Porsche https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yN3PZCa40QU Elefant / Ferdinand", getting tidied up.
-
If that is a Ferdinand Porsche chassis then that is a rare beast as well most of the early types of Ferdinand's were knocked out at Kursk once the Soviets figured that model had no M.G's for close in fighting with troops - Porsche was pretty p*ssed when their design did not get the nod from der F*rher but the electric drive system was too complex either way the tiger was rushed into service and suffered immensely from mechanical breakdowns when forced to do long marches and hilly terrain played havoc with it as well. But bear in mind only about 1300+ of all types were made and they destroyed more tanks per single unit than any other tank in WWII. The type 40 88mm shell could take out another AFV at 2000m not to shabby. It took 300,000 man hours to produce a Tiger in the USA utilizing the production line technique a M-4 Sherman rolled off the line every 30 minutes. If you want to read about the flaws and inept usage of the Tiger in WWII get a book called Sledgehammers you know there are quite a few if's in the German tactics throughout their campaigns thank god they had a meddler that was inept as a military leader and dabbled in everything he could to get his own way, I mean why have generals?

Repruction Tiger
-
It is said that, "everybody needs a hobby"; but THIS is serious!!
Original or reproduction tracks and drive sprockets?
Tiger ll wheels, or something different again?
Then, there's the "home-brew" Panther:
Definitely a better "garden ornament" than the usual concrete gnomes.

I know a guy who lives in Alberta that owns two Centurions, he loves them and really enjoys driving them around his place in the country.
