Can we set up a 03 FAQ page?

I think it would be helpful for the folks who don't want to sign up to ask questions.

If there was one what would your question and answer be?

Mine would be:

Q: Which 03s are safe to shoot?

A: Springfields above serial # 800,000 (approx.), Rock Island Arsenal above #285,507 both due to those being single heat treated; Remingtons and Smith Corona any number. Be aware of rifles converted from drill rifles, many of which are considered unsafe to fire. One more item is straight handled bolts which are single heat treated and should be avoided for shooters.

What do you say?

I think you have an excellent idea, Jeff. One of the gripes on the old forum (although it didn't bother me -- try answering a class of kindergartners "only once"!!!) was that the "same" questions got asked. It might save time if they could be referred to "the rules". Several other forums in a similar format, have so-called "stickies" with FAQ's in place. Don'y know if that is possible here, or not.

Basically a good idea

But you would need to have it moderated so that wrong info could be fixed and most wrong info could be blocked from posting.

For example, not all straight-handled bolts are SHT (some are DHT and some are made of nickel steel). And CMP sanctioned matches don't permit the use of SA serialized rifles below 810,000.

I've thought about adding an FAQ page to my web site, but the exposure would probably be far better if one could be hosted here at MilSurp.

Here's my contribution:

Question: Why does the M1903's rear sight leaf have a built-in windage compensation for increasing range?

Answer: To compensate for gyroscopic drift (not coriolis effect) caused by the spinning bullet interacting with air and influenced by gravity. The effect of gyroscopic drift is equal from any firing point on the planet at an equal height above mean sea level, for any bearing, and for any given sight elevation in calm air. Coriolis effect, on the other hand, is caused by the planet rotating under the bullet path, varies with latitude and bearing, and doesn't amount to a hill of beans for small arms fire.

Jeff . . . Just a note--

Not all "straight-handled" bolts are single-heat (case hardened) treated.

There are three codes of "straight-handled" bolts that are the better, "double-heat" treated. --Jim

Nice idea Jeff ... :cheers:

If you guys want it, I'll get it set up and "sticky" it for everyone, setting a "lock" on it to keep it clean. Rick is a CSP Moderator, so he'll be able to "unlock" it anytime to do adds/edit/deletes etc, to keep it current.

Send me the file, I'll beautify it and post the first one and you folks can take it from there ... :thup:

My vote is that you take Badger up on his offer, compile a set of the basic questions & answers (appropriate finishes, stock styles, etc.), and then solicit from known reliable contributors for more esoteric topics.

The one drwback to sticky's in my opinion is that sometimes the list gets longer and longer and users have to scroll past them to see the latest posts.

I think the idea is a good one. Just keep the list short maybe a FAQ Sticky and another one for "useful" links like VI Shooters Website, Bill Ricca (for parts), Nichlas and associates for Pubs Etc. (these are ust examples not meant to be all inclusive).

Sounds like a good idea to me. Maybe I can send a couple of things to "stickie". I think JGaynor raises a good point - maybe we could agree on a time limit.

Jim & Rick,

The idea of a "moderated" post is that it is managed by the moderator. Rick would have the power to unlock it to add/change/delete. It wouldn't just grow by itself.

I highly suggest you save what you can from those two links. I'm sure everything is stored somewhere, but how this site can access it is above my pay grade.

There was another site hosting some of the Major's stories because they didn't work well with the old software. I cannot remember where they are.

Vi Shooter, I understand. But my point is that would the minimal control required. Ideally the list of "stickys" would be limited to 3 or 4 more or less permanent items plus maybe 1 or 2 with limited "lifespans".

Possibly one approach might be to mail Rick some suggestions for websites to link to and topics that could be summarized in a brief FAQ writeup. The writing tasks could be farmed out to forum members.
