Possible SS bcd 42?

Picked up this nice bcd 42 98k yesterday. All matching except for bolt, bolt matches itself, blah blah...figured it was worth the $225 the guy was asking. Anyway, took it to the range today, got it apart for the first time tonight to clean it, and found what appears to be double 'S' runes on the bottom of the receiver. I'm normally not one to surrender to wishful thinking, and things that are normally too good to be true usually are, but these sure look like SS markings. Seller made no effort to point this out, doubt he ever took it apart. Have a look guys, tell me what you think.

I don't think that's where they marked them either.

I didn't think so either. Seemed like an odd place to stamp it, if that's what they are.

These are sub-inspector marks, which can be commonly found on the bottom of K98k receivers. They have no connection with the SS.

This rifle is also serial numbered 747* with no letter suffix. Unusual, or just part of the first run for 1942?

Bayonet lug also has a small hole drilled through it. Can't remember ever seeing that.

I'll bet that's for an attachment lug which allows an adapted bayonet to be fitted.

Probably! Never heard of 98ks with attachments like that.....but then again, never say never.

Looks like a VZ24 with the bottom and side sling swivel.

I never heard of that type bayonet attachment on a K98 either. No German bayonet would fit it that I'm aware of. The Argentine Mausers use those. Very curious.

No, they would only take other country's bayonets...not made for Mauser. That was the idea. I'm surprised you haven't heard of them.

I've heard of them, I have one on an Argentine Mauser. There aren't any bayonets that the Germans would have captured to have used them. Only thing I can think of is since they produced a lot of the export bayonets they had them on hand and decided to use them. These would work with most of the Souith American bayonets, the Spanish and Turkish.

Any of the early Spanish should work. Chinese also, at least from the commission rifles.

All genuine SS rifles apart from Depot rebuilds were produced at Steyr, Austria. They will be stamped BNZ 43, BNZ 44 or BNZ 4. You will see all kinds of K98's stamped with single and double runes as well as death's heads and the vast majority are fakes. It seems the fascination with the SS in the west has created quite a market for SS marked items. There were even a whack of Russian Captured German K98's that were shipped out of the Ukraine in the 1990's that the Ukrainians stamped with SS markings themselves before selling them.

I've definitely seen my share of humped up 'SS' rifles at gun shows in my area.
