Hello,
I inherited an M1 Garand and from the various serial numbers, SN 279901 trigger, hammer, bolt, op rod, check out as 1941-43 parts, receiver number D28291-9 SA with barrel number D35448-7 Rep-16 which seems to mean it comes from around 41-43. Am I in the ball park?
Welcome to the forum...we can be much more specific that that. I think 1941 is correct and someone will be along to tell you what month it was made. If you take a few pics we can help you more with details...

Thanks for the info. I was pretty excited when I started to research the serial numbers of the various parts. From the vague information I have gleaned, this gun was owned by my wife's grandfather and he may have brought it home with him at the end of WWII. I have it apart now ready to clean as it is in great shape, but in much need of cleaning as the grease use has hardened a bit. :D It has the patch/cartouche S.A - S.H.M on stock with of course the cannons and the "P." Thanks again.

The SA / SHM is a rebuild cartouche, not used on original rifles. Barrel drawing number shows it could be original. Need more information to determine anything else.Quote:

Well, my wind gauge has a bar across the front with a screw in the middle. It does have the left and right under the bar. Here are the SN numbers when I finally got the nerve to take it apart and find them; SN is 279901, Trigger housing is D28290-12 SA, Hammer is C46008-5 SA, Bolt is D28287-12 SA W9B, Operating rod is D35382-1 SA, Receiver is D28291-9 SA with RE 1 stamped over top of number and "&" near the end of the number. Barrel is D35448-7 Rep-16. I will try and get some pictures on here as soon as I figure out how to do so. Thanks for the help. :clap:

Nope, it is a S.A. - S.H.M. What is a PM? If that is personal email it is boomersusan@msn.com. I will dissemble and take some pictures. Finally got the nerve, and after watching several videos, gave it a try. Had a little problem with the op rod and I at first put in the spring upside down, but finally figured out what I had done wrong and got it back together.

The -1 op rod is from a late 1940 rifle, the other parts are 1942 and 1943. The barrel, if it is -7 revision, would be 8-41. The date should be on the front of the chamber area of the barrel. behind the op rod. At some point the rear sights were changed from the short pinion & flush nut to locking bar type. Another possible WW2 upgrade. Sounds like a nice rifle that could have been used in WW2 and had some parts replaced at that time. I would keep it just as it is as it is a piece of history.Quote:

Ok, here's what he's sent me so far...
Looks like a very nice rifle. Likely rebuilt in 1945 based on the Steven H. McGregor cartouched stock. Do we have any info on the operating rod and barrel?

Just the info in post #9 Chris...he didn't send those pics. Just a drawing number.
There is only one serial number on an M1 rifle. It's on the heel beneath the maker's name. All of the other numbers are part/drawing numbers.
