Afternoon all,
I had the L1A1's out today to take some group pictures for the first time, never got around to it for some reason. I need to photograph the bayonets and accessories at some point.

Nice rifles...I never did mind carrying those. If I had a choice between that and the Sub Machine Gun C1 at the time, I'd way rather carry the rifle...it felt better and was more...
The Singapore Police were all real shortarses and am sure that they'd have had short butts although they were all wood while we had them there.
We used to have their stuff through the big Base Workshop. Their stuff was generally very good. They had Webley revolvers while we had Enfields and Mr Amto the exeminer gave them all of our remaining Webley spares We got to know the man responsible for their weapons quite well. His name was Mr Richard Soliano. As we all came from 'up-country' for these big repair programmes he would meet us singlies (the single blokes) in Singapore City and take us out for a posh meal. Saw my first 'shortie' flash eliminator there.

With that past us now, the mandatory downtown discussions...what about this shorty flash hider? Slotted like ours or vented like the FAL? Wouldn't fit a bayonet any longer then?
It was the Australian shorty one fitted to some of the Singapore Police rifles. They had little short vents and took the standard bayonets although I don't ever remember seeing any bayonets come in with the Police stuff. I seem to think/recall that their tactical squads were made up from ex Gurkha soldiers. That's the sort of Police Force that people would listen to or at least, not upset - twice!
The short flash hider was supposed to be detrimental to accuracy but with a short butt fitted, the rifle was a little bit handier in the field.
All this talk of C1's and such caused me to get out my old home build to show you. With Badger's kind help of course!
With regard to my SPF L1, it is in excellent condition, showing very little signs of use prior to deactivation, its one of a batch brought to the UK for sale to civilian service rifle shooters, this one was Birmingham proofed in 1987 ... Just in time for nut job Michael Ryan to go on his murderous rampage, after the ban it was deactivated (1989). I guess fitted with Enfield made plastics when imported.Quote:

That is a superb rifle, I will try and get a set of C1A1 furniture, I have a charger loading top cover here somewhere, I think its as close as I am going to get.
I wonder why all three inch patterns have different receiver cuts, the Lithgow seems to follow the Fal parent rifle the closest, with the exception of the lightening cut.
Even the C1s had cuts in the receiver at first on each side of the charger guide. When loading 5 rds from the top your thumb would go down into these. Later it was deleted. Mrclark303, you should be able to scare up a Canadian rear sight, maybe a breech block carrier...there's usually something selling here in Canada if I look, but don't know what the legalities of sending it to you would be. We'd both probably end up in jail...

I would imagine that the machining of the body would be dependent of the machines and cutters you have available. I very much doubt whether factory A would go out and purchase a new machine do cut a certain profile form when they already had machines on hand that could cut something pretty similar that had no bearing on the final product in any case. Think Fazakerley v BSA No4 bodies
Same as Bren bodies from Enfield too. Some sides are clearly machined using up-cut milling while others are machined using what is clearly a slightly untidier down-cut process
Many thanks for the offer of help, I would be very interested in C1 furniture, late sling and back sight, but a bolt carrier is just too difficult to send, with the restrictions on sending pressure bearing components and magazines.Quote:

Is the BBCarrier a pressure bearing part I'm bound to ask? All it does is unlock and lock the breech block while tripping the safety sear is hardly a mechanical load. Difficult to imagine any pressure bearing there. A bit like calling your foot an 'accellerator' because it holds the pedal down. Just me thinking of course........
Never really thought about it before./ Anyone else got any thoughts?
Hi Peter, very true, on the face of it at least, but you know how it works from a "legal" perspective, if it gets proof stamped, its pressure baring!
I think he might be quite right Peter, from the perspective of "Those people"... I'll see if I can find a rear sight of the folding disc type for sale anywhere...and maybe wood...and let you know.
I wish it was 20 years ago. I had everything you're seeking back then. I have a couple of spare butts in different lengths and maybe some handguards. I've some sight parts and other small parts for the C1 and C2 but nothing complete anymore.
FYI: I think the Entreprise receivers were built using the Australian pattern. The lightening cut is present under the carry handle on the right hand side. They had ups and downs with quality control over the years but I was lucky that the receiver I got was very early and has never given me any problems. I Parkerized it to match and the finish matched the CAL original finish present on the TMH and other parts exactly. Some would mill off the left side markings and engrave the correct ones which I never bothered to do. The right side manufacturer and serial number markings can't be altered anyhow so it is what it is. I used all early milled parts like the magazine catch and body lock lever. I have the later fabricated parts but just thought the milled ones to be better looking.
I remember being at CS Military in Canada in the 90's and they had a rack full of the late issue OPP rifles available. All 8L series rifles in new condition. Beautiful they were. I'd guess most of them have been deactivated by now since they are classed as prohibs in Canada. I'm just happy to have my home built example that shoots extremely well. I have a C1 sniper scope for it too.
You'd probably find the vast majority are still in private hands, grandfathered to those people. They just can't leave the house to shoot...some HAVE been done in though, nature of the beast.Quote:

When it comes to the legal niceties - and I know we're deviating from the subject here - but the fact that a part is proofed will never override the simple FACT in law that it is not a load or pressure bearing part. It is called an 'irrefutable point of law' that can be proven. Like , say, christmas day falls on 25th December or the top traffic light colour is red. The rifle will fire and stay locked without the carrier. Try it with some blanks + BFA and see.......... If it were so, then a Bren piston post would be proofed. I appreciate that no one is game to take 'them' on in order to prove the point but.........
In fact a flash eliminator is more pressure bearing than the BBCarrier. That's why they split! I'd say that Christmas day is more pressure bearing too. Just joking!
Yep, stupid isn't it, when my Lithgow L1A1 came back from from proof in January, they stamped just about everything ... including the TMH! And TWO stamps on the flash eliminator ... go figure!
Has anyone, I wonder, been mad enough to fire a live round without the carrier present?!?
