Need opion on no4 Savage

Guy I just bought this No 4 mark1 U.U. Property marked Savage, Price was 125.00 So I not worried about that. My questions are looks like a re-paint, stock been re-done but nicely. Best Pictures of markings. Bot looks wrong but is matching to receiver. bore it perfect, only problem I found cocking piece has been brazed. I will replace it so that I can shoot rifle. Will keep damaged one with rifle as it is marked with letter S. Just want an honest opinion on it.

No problem there i can flip it or keep it depends on how it shoots an if any one here sees a major problem I only have one no4 i picked up to turn an next gun show as its a mix master an been sported up.
Guy brought it in show an i was too busy selling parts an my son asked if price was good, My answer is any firearm in shooting condition is worth 100.00 minimum. So he bought it.

Springfield Sporters has the Savage cocking piece. cocking piece

The magazine looks a little rough and it's not a Savage.

The front sight protector is the stamped Savage type. The S mark is probably on the other side of the front band.

I am no expert. I am sure someone who really knows these guns will chime in.

A gun like that with the cocking piece replaced would retail for around $350 at a collectors show down here.

Vince I though that would be the price of a nice rifle. Magazine looks like it was rusted an panted. Looking thru my parts mess now for a cocking piece, so i can run some rounds thru it. Just do not want to shoot it with that brazing work on it. It might be ok but why chance it

It's brazed at a part of the cocking piece that is an important safety feature called the half cock which is there to ensure that........ Anyway........ not completely safe. As a matter of interest, changing a cocking piece isn't a straightforward simple job if you want a safe and correct No4 afterwards. There's a long thread about fitting up the individual parts of a bolt as all of the parts are inter-related

Used to be a wonderful place years ago before the current owns dad died. the military items would make you cry.

The magazine looks like it's from an SMLE.
From the side view I always first look at the two grooves in the body pressing. More often than not if they reach all the way to the bottom plate I've found that the magazine was an SMLE type. The grooves in original No4 mags always seem to stop short of the bottom.
Not a problem as many SMLE mags were converted to fit the No.4 with the lower rear lug ground off and if it feeds and works fine that's all that matters really.

Yes, the mag is a #1 Mk3 mag. You can see the backstrap at the bottom. Easy to change if there's a problem with function.

I am telling myself the "barrel wall" is constructed of sewer pipe barrels to avoid a depression like the one I had after seing the photos of all the Japanese rifles being dumped into Tokyo Bay.

Watching that would make one think the ocean would have raised a foot because of all the hardware and ammo dumped into it.

You could make a nice garden fence out of those barrels.

Melt them and send them to China. Harbor Freight Is low on inventory.

Just wish I knew how many different rifles an machine gun barrels there are in that wall I was a teen when i first saw it an it was only a foot high.
Finally got mag out of well i think it was stuck due to wet paint there is only 1 marking on mag that is a number 4

A little cleaning solvent will take most rattle can paints off. MEK will too and not damage blued parts.

You can also see the reinforcing grooves extend to the bottom of the side walls.

The fact that the import markings are painted over tells you something mmppres. You might as well parkerize the bolt and finish the job yourself.

Nice looking wood too.
