cleaning rod

Hi, I am tired of trying to connect rod sections together to clean my 1898 Krag rifle. I am looking to get a one piece rod - but which one ?

It would seem she needs at least a 44" rod to clean from the breech. Should I go for carbon fiber, coated steel, brass ?

Tipton rods seem nice but pricey. Any help would be great. Any ideas Jim?

Dewey rod plus Dewey Parker Hale style jag and 2 x 2 patches. With this combination you will be in good shape.

Personal choice on all the above ask around and see what sort of deal your LGS can offer, carbon may be expensive but rod coverings do wear away and lose bits off them, bit like women and cars ooops! did not say that disregard my last....:madsmile:

I have a Parker Hale one piece also. Yellow with black handle...jag...works perfectly. When the cover wears out, get another.

I have that many rods I do not know what to do with them all Pro-shot, Tetra, Hoppes Elite yada yada and a couple of others why I even have one type that Peter would have used millions of times in the past a broad arrow B.A marked armourers rod never use it just wanted one. In all fairness it is up to you and what you feel best fits your purpose I use pre-cut patches and Montana Jag also a nylon scrubber brush bit useless utilizing a copper brush as it is dissolving whilst you use it with copper solvent?
In my few years in shooting I have found at times it is better when you cut the patch from the 3x2 roll (use this on my 303's, 308's) cut them a little bit smaller as it saves bent rods, do not know how I know that lot!!!!

For my model 1898 Krag rifles, I used a one-piece "Outers" stainless steel rod. It is 36 1/2 inches long with the removable brass .30 cal. 'screw-in' Tip and accepts most brands of brushes. It swivels nicely and has a 'sliding brass guide' that centers nicely in the Krag and '03 Springfield receivers. I keep a paper towel handy and wipe residue off of the Rod frequently. I use good quality cloth patches (I like the old square G.I. ones best).

Likewise, I use paper towel to wipe my cleaning rod regularly. I use the military cotton 7.62 patches myself, I have several thousand...

Does anyone else flush their bronze bore brushes in hot water after use? I find it helps protect the bristles from the ravages of copper solvent and helps my treasured (and difficult to acquire over here) Parker Hale brushes last a wee while longer. Or is it just my imagination?:dunno:

I use break cleaner or varsol.

I have two small containers full of mentholated spirits in the range gun box, one is for the brushes just rinse them in it inside the jar pull out then air dry, after patching out the solvent I then use the clean metho on a patch to neutralize the copper solvent patching out, letting the bore air dry (matter of seconds) then oil the bore......

Thank you all for the advice and comments. Just got my Dewey one piece coated rod yesterday. What a beauty ! Comes with Jag and adapter. Appears to swivel on ball bearings. Took three days to arrive by regular shipping. Precut patches are great but - what better end for a T shirt ?

Great choice Kablair. Bought my first Dewey rod in .22 for my first AR. Was so impressed I ordered a .30 for my milsurps together with one of their Parker Hale style jags. Stiffer than my actual Parker Hale .30 rods, which are now relegated to bronze brush duty.
