"Dog Leg Hammer" - what is it? Do I have one?

When documenting my spare parts I also took a group picture of my M1 Carbine hammers. I've been told that it looks like there are so-called "dog leg hammers" among them. A quick research showed that they are differently shaped hammers.

With this I'd vote that the three in the upper left corner are dog-leg hammers. Is this right? And if yes, do they command a premium? And are they really only an early production step, which was later changed?

You are correct. Three upper left and the rest aren't. Those are valuable...and nice shape.

Greater mass on the one hammer RCS, I can see why they'd need to pare it down and save the steel...and did.

actually that was what they call a "Fat Boy" hammer. there are two* types of doglegs, then the fatboy (technically the 3rd fatboy). The fatboy was used a short time followed by the introduction of the straight hammer.
they had issues with some early parts some they modified to for safety issues or breakage, others changed to save time. I believe the Fat Boy was to save time.

new2brass, which carbine manufactures used the "3rd variation of the fatboy hammer" as shown in my photo above ?

Rock-Ola, S'G' and S.G. were reported as using some of these. Use of the Fat Boy dog leg only lasted a very short time but the standard type 3 hammer came into use.

Not because I wanted to become an expert, but mainly to being curious of how many small details turn up, I decided that I should dig through the grease and do a few more pictures ... most hammers are "W" marked. So how many are really "dog leg", and which manufacturers do I have?

None of those.

Huh ... they are the same as the ones pictured in the starting post? Am I'm stupid now?

You aren't stupid, the paper isn't the same. Fist pic has three dogleg. This one doesn't have any. The fist pic has two hammers that show silver and the rest black. This pic has one black and the rest show silver. A dogleg stands out. This isn't the same pic. That's all.

Basically what Bruce stated. S.G. made their own hammers but do not think they made a Fat Boy as by the time they were up and running the straight hammer was in use. but may have had a transfer from Rockola with KR (made for Rock-Ola by Kal Machine) S'G' made their own hammers as well (yes same company, different locations) and as seen above did make the FatBoy hammers. These can bee seen on IP as well as S'G' . This was done after IP had lost its contract and being assembled by the Grand Rapids plant.
National Cash Register made them for Inland.

After all the discussion about carbines, finally a small detail comes out that I've not even heard discussed before. Interesting. And to find they aren't early as I'd guess, but almost like a trial part way through.

Jim, lots of small details lost in the shuffle. But working on that. Problem with the fatboy is that it is a narrow window for them to be correct. I suspect many wound up as spares. And then obsolete.

All that makes sense. It was a trying time for all.

Urm .. I was under the impression that I only have 11 spare hammers. But you managed to confuse me now! Will check if I didn't pick from different boxes and have two places where I store 11 hammers each. Wouldn't be the worst thing to happen :)

Dang, you were right! Funny detail that I have two lots of 11 hammers each, stored seperately ... So I now took pictures of the same ones as in the starting post. Wonder what you can tell me on the manufacturers?
