Tom, we have a whole series of instructions at the beginning of the Garand/M14 section. The book is there and has the section about this fault. There are several reasons possible and you should have a look. It's not a short answer...clip latch, or spring...timing, bullet guide...faulty clips...many things. Also there's the search feature at the top of this page.
Thanks Jim, the search gave me some things to try....
Rarely is it the clip latch. Most common cause is foreign enblocs, clip latch spring or worn lobe on bullet guide
I ordered a Clip Latch, Clip Latch Spring, Clip LatchPin & a Bullet Guide from Fulton Armory.
Basically I'm shotgunning the whole system.
After I replace these parts if the problem persists, I'll start eliminating the en-block clips, I have plenty....
You are spending a bunch of $$$ that possible a couple $$$ spring would fix
I realize that shotgunning the problem cost more money...
But in the process I'll learn more about the M1 Garand & the various measurement between parts.
You & I both know the problem wasprobably the en-bloc clip.......
...and sometimes it is just aggravating to order the other stuff part by part...

Not trying to argue but using the shotgun approach replacing parts will not tell you what the issue really was. You could have first tried new enblocs and measured the bullet guide lobe to see if it was inspec. You can also stretch the old clip latch spring and fire he rifle again. If the prblem was solved you would know its the spring and it could have been replaced. In all my years of messing with Garands I have never come across a out of spec clip latch
Good luck with your rifle
However, one can buy all the parts en masse and then apply the parts one at a time. ;)

An easy way to isolate it to the clip latch spring is to pull the spring, give it a pull to stretch it some and try it again. If that fixes it, replace the spring. I, too, am not a proponent of replacing a grip of parts. One at a time and start with the easiest and cheapest.
I replaced the Clip latch & spring. The Enbloc clip ejection problem has been solved.
The past hour I have been researching my books but failed to find any dimension specs on the front or rear lug of the Clip latch. I'm going to assume the problem was the spring.
Later I will compare the new & old Clip latch and may even re-install the old part and make another trip the range.
Found the specs for the Clip latch @ Garand gear website.
The front measures .1225" the spec is .132" -.015".
The Clip Latch is within .0055", that's a small number....
