Muzzle yes, throat no.
You might be able to use the M1 gauge, but you would need to interpolate where the gauge reads on the M1 and where it reads on the M1917. My guess is that if you add the distance from the M1 point to the M1917 point and subtract that distance from the reading, you should be pretty close. I am making these numbers up since I don't have a gauge but if on a pristine M1 barrel you have a "0" and your reading in the M1917 is a "5" measure from "5" toward "0" the difference distance and now you have a closer number. The problem may be that you can't see the numbers on the M1917. No problem, mark the gauge where you can see it with a sharpie and again use the difference.

Ok if you can use on the 03 and the 17 would you close the bolt and then put a mark on the bolt straight down from the receiver? Then measure from the locking lugs to your mark and then subtract that from the guage? If so you learn something new each day.
close the bolt???the tool is 15 inched long...that may be tough to do..
15''? My guage is nowhere near that size. What I am saying is the M1 guage measures from the bolt lugs so if you put the bolt in and close it you could measure down down from the reciever and put a mark on the 03 bolt. Then measure from the bolt lugs to your mark. Next put you guage in and mark down from the reciever and put a mark on your guage. Then take the measurement from the bolt and substact the differance. This might be close to the 03's measurment.
It sounds like you have a headspace gauge. A throat gauge looks like this:

It does not need the bolt to operate. Headspace is from a datum line where the shoulder is 0.375" to the bolt face. Throat erosion is ahead of the case neck and is the diameter of the throat or leade, wear from firing erodes it. M1 Garands have a longish throat compared to the M1917 or M1903/a3 rifles.

If you are talking to me I have a M1 THROAT guage. When you put the throat guage in a M1 you look down from the reciever to get the measurment. Since the bolt lugs on a M1 are located at the back of reciever not like a 03 which are inside if you take the difference between the two you could get a rough measurment.Quote:

D-1, sorry but your involvement of the bolt threw me. I have checked several M1's but always had the bolt locked back. Maybe it is my semantics but on my M1 the rear of the receiver is where the serial number is. I agree that the bolt lugs are not under a shroud like most bolt actions but they are still at the front. My experience is that most of the M1917 rifles we see were not used very heavily. Some did see service in WW1 but most of the rifles produced were later used for second line troops, drill, training and given to Allies after WW2. Many had replacement barrels from Johnson Automatics, High Standard and RIA/Savage then put into storage. My long winded point is that throat wear is probably much lower than M1's or even Springfields. I know shooters who go through an AR barrel per year shooting competitively. Myself, I doubt I will ever shoot my M1917 enough to warrant a new barrel. Let us know how things pan out.

I have talked to Steve Mathews about his ME TE tool (it is a hobbyist and not the real thing but works just fine)
He never calibrated it to the 1917, but he said the checks he made were close.
As we are not talking small amounts here (relatively speaking) it does not matter if its 1/2 a number off or even a whole number.
they tend to fall in the very good to ok, or off the edge of the map.
My sampling looks like its no more than 1/2 off. Muzzle is identical. Just read at the recess in the crown not the top.
Also the SM ignores the first line (that is zero). We have seen sub zero on a couple rifles. Doesn't mean anything, mfg varation.
