Glad to be here. Recently bitten by the M1 Carbine bug. I hope I don't inundate you with questions. I have what appears to be a nearly complete NPM M1 from the early fall of 1943. trying to piece this together has been fun and i trust you will be able to get me across the finish line!

Welcome to the forum. Many members can offer suggestions after critiquing your carbine.
What would be helpful is a data sheet showing how the parts are marked. Pictures of it taken apart. Serial number range, things like that.

If your new to carbines... please ask before you attempt anything. Many carbines have been de-valued or nearly ruined by owners thinking their doing the right thing.
There are no stupid questions ............ I remember some of my first ??'s taking some hard core gruff from another forum site. Here as JimF has stated, you'll find some of the best and friendly at that.

PS I like to document with pictures new to me carbines BEFORE cleaning as I break them down. I believe this helps show wear patterns.

Duck hunting on a full moon, no wind and relatively mild temperatures is a recipe for watching ducks fly at first light and then nothing. We knocked down 7, but boy was it slow. They just flew out to the Choptank River and stayed there. But that being said, a spectacular red sky at sunrise, great company and some lively banter in the blind made for a fantastic day! Now back to work and getting you some pictures and a Data sheet.Quote:

One thing did catch my eye, the milled rear sight. I don't know if I have ever seen what I thought was an original NPM with an adj rear sight.

I went by the word offered, which implies an offer to trade or perhaps a cash sale. Maybe the only jump to conclusions would be in it being a site member, but knowing how PM's are exchanged on sites like this and others when someone finds out what you have, it wouldn't surprise me at all. Still, there's more good people than bad in this field, it's knowing which way that person's ethics sway is the trick.

Ted...You can take a picture of it like the one you did and resize it and post it....There is others way to do it. There's a thread here you can view about posting and get some ideas like that also. Happy Shooting
Has a photo of the hammer been posted? It's probably real, but we'd like to see pics you have of it anyway.

A good indication would be lack of second set of stake marks.

There are two stake marks at the sight. I'll post a picture. That is why I'm confident the sight was changed from the original flip type sight.
Here is my Data Sheet for review. There is a period stamped after CAL(.) before 30 on the receiver. I missed that on the Data sheet.

You were right, there is a chisel mark front and rear on the "left" side of the receiver at the sight dovetail. Look closely and you will see them...Quote:

The gun shoots fine! I ran 75 rounds through it this morning and each of the 15 round magazines performed perfectly. The one 30 rounder I cycled had two failures to feed, but the rifle clears easily by rotating the gun 90 degrees and simply dropping the round onto the shooting bench. I was not surprised after reading about the issues with the larger capacity magazines.
I started with 3 rounds at 7 yards aimed at the center of the target just to see where the rifle was hitting. Then moved to 10 yards and put 6 or 7 rounds on the target. After all the moving of the sight that I did while cleaning I just moved the sight as close to the centerline of the barrel and front sight. I never moved the sight this morning, I got lucky.

I then moved the target out to 19 yards and fired the balance of the 1st 15 round magazine at the target center. After that I just placed 1" diameter circles on the target starting at the upper left hand corner and them moved counterclockwise around the target. The two offhand groups were shot with the 30 round magazine at 19 yards and then finishing with 14 rounds at 10 yards.

The 15 rounds at the bottom center was with 2 mags from my RIA Baby Rock .380 carry pistol.
Looks good for close, now how about 100 and 200? That will show if things are centered...

Not totally surprised by that. The weight of a loaded 30 round magazine using a type 2 magazine catch doesn't have the same stability that the type 5 catch with the extra tab. Also, was it a GI or aftermarket 30 round magazine?Quote:

That photo of the 10 yard off-hand target, 14 rounds (+/-), fired without a hitch. The feeding issues happened with a full magazine which would fully support your analysis. Looks like I need another M1!

Ewall,
Look for a TN stamp on the bottom left edge of your HG, not the notched side (normally). Most TN's I've seen are stamped between 1/2 way, to 3/4 towards the frt lip. Stamped small @ 1/16", so you may have to magnify and look from many angles.
