Is this silenced MK5 Sten (U.K. deactivated) something of a rarity? I thought that Mk2s were mainly used for silenced versions?
I know where this gun is and in my opinion its a fake. The Mk5S had a clamped on ring type affair for a front sight and the Mk6 had a mk2 type sight. Its been refinished probably to hide the milling for the dovetail front sight.

The end cap on the questionable silencer is the MkII type, though the real MkII type is very close in length to the Mk6 type silencer.

Notice that on a real MkII the end cap does not butt up against the face of the tube, it threads inside...unlike the example in the OP.

This is a silencer used on the Mk6 type, this silencer is in a British museum. You can clearly see the tube joining collar (expansion in the middle) under the heat wrap.

This Sten MkVI is in a military museum collection (in Norway?).
The jacket is too thick too. The originals were quite thin, a bit of canvas over a bit of horsehair matting over some asbestos string - Vickers barrel gland packing material and tightened up so you could look along the sights.
Why do you (and many others incidentally) call the Sten a STEn? It's not! The word STEN is a word in its own right in accordance with the Oxford Dictionary.

I know this is an ancient thread but it was mentioned that there was a sten MK5 with a suppressor which used a clamp on front sight , the only other reference I’ve seen to it was in the article that was linked to in this thread. I did some emailing and someone reputable told me SASC has one in their collection but I haven’t been able to get in contact with anyone there. Does anyone here have a photograph of the front sight used ? Maybe a British member could see if they can see if it actually exists? I have a MK5 and would love to make a reproduction of the sight to use with a suppressor. I can’t bring myself to modify the gun into mk6 configuration just to use a suppressor.
The Mk5S certainly does exist at Warminster and so far as I recall, there are photos of said gun in a little quite readable book called The Sten Machine Carbine.

Check directly with Susan Fraser at Collector Grade Publications. I think she still has some copies available. She's carrying on as best she can since Blake's passing.
As said, the silencer is one of the mock-up (Indian made?) examples made a few years back.
Cross reference, question everything and never buy the story...

Awesome , I just sent you a PM. I still plan on making a reproduction front sight but my plans got pushed back. I bought a sten mk2 local to me on a form 4 so my plans of suppressing the mk5 just got pushed back. I plan on getting one of GSL’s sten suppressors. I’m not looking for 100 percent authentic, just something I can go to the range with and enjoy !
