Why would you think there'd be so many different sizes...?
There was short, normal, long and bantam butts (I believe only Long Branch made the bantam butt.) to suit the various stature of soldier. The normal length stock is not marked but the short has a "S" near the butt plate on the top and the long has a "L" in a similar place. I don't know if the bantam butt is marked but would hazard at a guess that it is. There is about a 1/2" difference between the short, normal and long butts.
I have added an official explanation of the butt lengths for the Lee-Enfield No. 4 on my web site. I hope that this will help.
I take it you two didn't look at the in house link either...why do we have such features? There's far more explanation that you provided.
I like the long buttstock on my no4 s. The rifle feels right on the range.

Lots are so marked... Later it was deemed not required.

You might want to try the Google CSE custom search engine located in the top right corner where it says "Search Milsurps.Com", which ONLY seraches our site. It has been around for years and we spent hundreds of dollars developing it for the benefit of all our members. This custom search engine is unique to our site and not found on any other firearms collector's site on the Internet, so I assume you haven't tried it to see how easy it is to find highly detailed information instead of having to post a redundant question.
For example, in your case, type in the same words no4 butt stock length , which you used for the subject of your post and see what happens .. ;)
I only had a quick look but there's dozens and dozens of detailed threads and pics which would more than answer your question.
Browningautorifle (Jim) attempted to give you (and others) a hint of an example single link that comes up when this valuable search resource is actually used, so I do understand and share his frustration. :banghead:
I wish we could come up with a simple way to have more members use it, instead of the deja vu of seeing the same question threads started over and over and over and over again .. :lol:
The moral of my post? Well, simply put, before creating a completely new thread asking a question, we sincerely request that everyone do a quick scan using our in-house Google CSE custom search engine, just to see if the answer to their question has already been answered by someone else over the last 10+ years.

6 2 There used to be a lot of new no4 wood around about five years ago. Mostly long branch walnut and
hardwood. A friend of mine used to run an armory in Montreal. He taught me the proper way to use a no4.
Since I a ready had a collection of 303/308 no4s, getting proper wood was easy.
The majority of my target no4 rifles already came with long buttstocks, so it wasn't hard to see why.
I have about 20 sets of wood for future use. But, one doesn't see the no4 target rifles like before.

Ok, so if that's a challenge for some folks, then I assume everyone is aware of a secondary method of finding threads on subject content similar to what they posted.
In this case, the OP's title of his thread was no4 butt stock length
So, if you simply scroll to the very bottom of any page in a thread being displayed, you'll see a large box titled Similar Threads. What our site software tries to do, is match the title of any current thread to titles of any past threads that approximate the same description.
In the case of this thread, here's what it looks like.. ;)

It doesn't necessarily find ALL the threads that using the more thorough Search Milsurps.Com function does, but sometimes it's good enough to get a thread starter (and others) the information they were looking for.

I'm trying to find a Long Branch unissued walnut stock set for my 45 No4 Mk1*...not an easy task. I know on ebay there is British sets from the UK in either birch or beech (can't remember) and my LB Enfield does have an "ENGLAND" stamp on it....suppose I could get away with the brit version....but I just really want a LB walnut set lolQuote:
