For a No.4 Mk1* rifle, what rear sights are correct? Would the milled micrometer sight be kosher?
They are ALL correct.
I expect this will be an easy one for Peter et al - I was shooting my No4 Mk 1(T) with iron sights on Sunday, for the first time. I found the adjusting screw which elevates the slide has a "rotational floppiness" about it and not a definite click as it goes round.
What do I need to replace, in what sequence do I take it apart, and what goes wrong when doing it the 1st time?
I attach a diagram of the parts to help the explanation make sense to me...
I am sure Peter has mentioned a few times about a certain little arrangement (4 & 5 ?) that acts on the indents on the thumb wheel apparently it is a right little sod to fit up
Just as Cinders has mentioned. You need to replace the detent spring and the plunger (or ball). And guess what's going to happen......? Yep, that little ball or plunger and/or spring are going to whizzzzzzz off somewhere. Suggest that you take it apart inside a large plastic bag and assemble it the same way after having cleaned it with a dob of grease on the spring and ball.
After you've done a zillion of them it gets easier. I used to hold the leaf - 2 in a vice with the spring hole upwards. Put greased up spring in hole and ball on top of greased up spring. Shape a piece of thin shim into a squared off U section and pull the ball and spring into the hole. Press in the adjusting knob -8 secure and pull shim out then test.
You could also replace the pin - 3 if it shows signs of wear. Because the wear allows up/down endfloat of the cursor -7

I didn't want to replace the original No 4(T) rearsight which has its ground-off battle sight. Hence my wanting to fix this one up. Yes yes Peter I know it would be OK in your hands but I am a sentimental fool...
As for a target sight: I use the PH 8/53 sight, which is a quick fit to the original rearsight.
I had even hoped it would flip down and allow the No 32 scope to sit above it - but no such luck - even with the eyepiece unscrewed the 8/53 sight body prevents proper seating of the telescopic sight.

Did you intend to say, what rear sights were originally fitted by the Long Branch and Savage factories to the No4 MK1* rifles which the 2 plants manufactured during the period of WW2? Was the micrometer adjustable rear sight originally fitted by the 2 factories to the No4 MK1* rifle during the WW2 period or would this sight have been retro fitted to this rifle (MK1* version)?Quote:

Long Branch No.4Mk.1* rifles were fitted with early Long Branch manufacture Mk.1, (rare), Mk.II, Mk.III and C Mk.3 rear sights at the factory. Most Long Branch rifles dated 1942 and 1943 were fitted with Mk.II sights. The Mk.III sights were fitted starting at some point in 1944 and the C Mk.III throughout 1949 and 1950 production. They are distinctly different than the British Mk.III which has an additional washer fitted.
Savage No.4Mk.1* rifles were fitted early on with Savage manufacture Mk.1 sights but they are rare and usually only seen on unaltered Mk.1 rifles. The remaining production from 1942-1944 were fitted with the Mk.II sight.
