Hello, I have an 1896 Krag rifle that I think may have an 1898 stock, but I cannot find anything definitive. I believe the difference is where the bolt handle rests. Can someone please show me how an 1896 stock is supposed to look in this area? Also, what is the correct rear sight a '96 is supposed to have? Thanks.
Early is scooped out and later is cut out at the bolt handle.
Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. I assume that just like any other service rifle they were re built and got whatever stock was next in the bin.
That and when they went for a rebuild or repair they were fitted with whatever was appropriate. Lots have had things done in the 80 plus years since even the last armories returned them.Quote:

Springfield Armory did not 'mix' stocks between 1896 and 1898 models.
During Armory rebuild/repair activity, a rifle's stock was likely switched, but, the stocks were model specific. Model 1896 stocks went on model 1896 actions and model 1898 stocks went on model 1898 actions.
Springfield Armory did not 'cobble things together', to make do.
Bannerman, W. Stokes Kirk, and hobbyists, did 'improvise' with incorrect stocks.
A model 1896 Krag rifle may have a model 1896, model 1901, or model 1902, rifle rear-sight, (with appropriate hand-guard), depending on, if and when, it was updated or rebuilt.

'shooter88' - What model rear sight is on your Krag?
(2nd from left) - 1902, (3rd from left) - 1901, and (5th from left) - 1896 were all used. Hand-guards are different and specific for each sight.
