First T 99 Arisaka

Hello all. Just joined here. Recently acquired a Type 99. It is my first milsurp rifle. I'll get some pictures up in the coming days, but I'll share what I know. And ask questions about what I don't.

I am thinking I want to restore this rifle to as much original as possible.

Based on my research, I have a Series 7 Nagoya arsenal produced rifle. Serial # 90xxx should put it mid '44?

It has full, non defaced mum and numbers match.

It has a bubba sporter stock. That is what I want to correct. However, I want to find the correct stock and metal.

I have seen pictures of some variations even within a series and examples of early vs late war models. I have also seen variations where it appears that later series have features of earlier series.

Mine has a thin metal butt plate. It had a single screw sling swivel. It has the earlier rear sight without the AA wings. It is hard to tell if they were broke off, removed, or never came with. It has the front sight with the "guards".

Hoping to find some information here.

Nagoya series 7's are pretty far down the substitute rifle path. Yours would never have had the anti-aircraft wings.

Liberty Tree has one mid war t99 stock right now that looks about right, but there are no pics of the stamp u der the stock wrist to see if it is a Nagoya stock or not. They also have top handgaurds and other hardware. Good luck on your project.

I have seen stocks with a short handguard and long ones. Not sure which would be correct for mine. Also the metal for the stock. Which fore end? Cleaning rod or no? Stuff like that.

If that is the original stock that has been cut down it should have had the full length top handgaurd. The rear barrel band would have no provision for a monopod. As for a cleaning rod IF it had one it would be the short screw in one. This late in the series it could have had a recycled previously rejected stock with the hole for the rod, but no rod provided. Some also had the rod hole plugged. There are a lot of variations that could be correct.

The 7th series rifle is the start of the late features for Nagoya . It is a one of a kind rifle . It looks like it is in the wrong stock now , hard to tell with the photos . Nag 7,s did not use reject stocks . The 7 stock is a one of a kind because of the special short rear sight . Only a 7 stock and hand guard will fit the rear sight . The correct stock will have a short cut out for the rear sight , a special long hand guard , it should ?, have a wood butt plate [ right on the line for that change ] and no cleaning rod . Since it is right on the line for some features , a correct restoration will not be possible as only THAT rifle as made would tell what should be there . Since Type 99's are recorded by observation , if "restored" will the wrong parts it will just mislead later .

The "original" owner (now deceased) was a WWII Navy Veteran. I'm suspecting this is a bring home. The stock was cut and sanded in an attempt to make it a sporter. Fortunately, nothing on the rifle was touched. It appears to be in original condition, except for the stock. The bore is clean and shiny with good rifling. All the bolt parts match numbers. I have seen (picture) many variations of the series 7. Some with metal butt plates, some with wood. Some with long handguards, some with short.

I guess the only way to get a close guess, would be to find other 7's with a close serial number.

I'm just looking to do more of a period correct restoration rather than exact restoration of the original.

ETA: Found pictures of a Series 7 with a serial #85xxx which showed features of mine with the full length handguard. Pictures of another with serial #95xxx had fixed rear peep sight, short handguard and wood butt plate. Mine is in the middle.

So, I'm figuring no monopod and no provision for one. No dust cover.Probably no cleaning rod, but short one if so.

I wish I could find my Japanese rifle books so I could be of better help but I've been looking for them for two weeks with no success. I have a suspicion where they have to be so may look there later. They aren't anywhere else. The thing with the transition rifles is they were in transition so older parts are still found on them until they were used up.

I am going off of observations of my 21 series 7 rifles . Mono pods and dust covers were dropped two series before the 7 . The rear sight on the rifle shows what stock and hand guard it took . A full side photo of the stock would help on telling if it was original .

Do you have anything with close enough serial number that would give me ideas? Measurements of the handguard to help find the correct one?

The break is right about 90,000 . Your rifle is to close to call , that is what I meant by the only way to know would have been YOUR rifle . I have a late 89,000 that is made one way and a early 91,000 that is another . To know for sure I would need an original rifle of say 90352 !! I would still like a side view of your stock .

It would take a long time to search my T-99 collection to find a s-7 to measure the handguard for your rifle .
