hello-- new here and this is my first thread. it is about a stock on a garand #9077xx and to me the stock in question seems to be a rebuild. in the channel there is a number 36. on the pistol grip heel there is a RA-P stamp. 2 p's under the pistol grip. without serifs in a circle and with serifs, no circle below. i have a bad feeling about this stock and need some knowlegable advice. thank you.

You gotta wonder if it was made bad on purpose so that no one could be fooled by it. I'm certainly not good at picking out fakes but even I can tell that's not close.
Specifically, what is wrong with the cartouche? I have compared it to pictures in a couple of books I have and it looks pretty good.
That part of the stock is curved and the stamp was flat so it all won't show. If you said the stock itself was suspect, is it walnut, how come it looks so good for being approx. 65 years old and having been in a couple of wars, then I can understand peoples' doubts.
Is that stock even USGI?

While the stock may be real and it might have a real "P" and a tiny RA from its previous rebuild, somebody did a shabby job of stamping it with a cartouche.
This is not uncommon and there is a guy out there who sells stamps and offers to "professionally remark" new made stocks and older stoacks to give the buyer a little orginality.
There are plenty of crooks peddling this stuff. I stick with solid collectors and dealers I know and trust, when buying from a guy with a random Garand, I proceed carefully.
As many have said before me, "Buy the gun NOT the story." If it looks fake it probably is fake, if it comes with a garbage story even more so.

well guys i feel kind of down over this. the m-1 i have has a type 1 rear site and the rest of the parts are correct. yes it is not the stock that came with it and the one you see was bought as real from what i was told in the late 80's. sure there are crooks out there and i dont want to sell the garand or break it up for parts. it is just the stock that kills it. where do you find one now at this time?? in any event- thanks for the input.:thup::bow:
RickB-- Thanks for pointing out the M. It is so obvious now. The "V" part of the M should extend below the center horizontal line in the E and it clearly doesn't.
Hi, folks. I am new to this forum, but have been following this thread about the SA/EMcF cartouche. I too am looking for the real deal and am aware that there are a lot of counterfeits out there. Would you guys mind giving me your evaluation and opinion of the authenticity of the following marks? Thanks, I appreciate it! Bob Betette.
Without more detailed up close photos it's hard to say but my opinion is they are both fake.
I would be suspicious of ANY cartouched stock, no matter what the cartouches are on the stock. I would pass on any stock UNLESS I really knew that the stock was genuine and attested to by the seller.
Several years ago I had a Reinhart ***in M1 stock that I had marked with the SA/EMcF cartouche. It was a reproduction all the way. Granted the cartouche "dressed-up" the rifle, but I wasn't satisfied and the stock set was just not USGI. I bought USGI Handguards and a original USGI stock from Doug's Stockpile and restocked the rifle.
I managed to sell the stock set at cost on eBay and made sure of listing in the auction that the stock set was a reproduction set. The buyer who bought the set tried to accuse me of not indicating that the set was reproduction, when I clearly indicated such in the auction. I wasn't trying to "scam" anyone, but the new owner(s) could potentially "pass off" the stock as genuine. Too many unscrupulous people out there.

I have not been around for awhile but that one is not even a good fake IMHO :move eek:
