Someone ought to ask the seller for the serial number and then post it here.
Done will see what happens, apparently found in a family!
Looks like it spent some time in the barn doesn't it?
Here is the reply I have messaged them further with the same request for the serial No and maker of the scope so if possible it can be traced.
hello,
with my camera to take some good pics and it's difficult to read some what is writting on the scope.
but i can garanty to you this scope is 10000000000000 % original found in Normandie and never in collection before me.
greeting

Am awaiting the next reply.
There you go. You have his personal guarantee...now you can buy the story.
Think I will pass on that one Jim but if they get back to me I will definitely post the serial so it can be traced makes you wonder what happened to the rest of the kit or soldier who carried it. Although it may have been an air dropped one to the resistance who knows.
Maybe he could take a rubbing of the markings?
No response so far to my 2nd e mail will keep you all posted.
Postscript ~ Scope has 5 bids on it with 3 days to go the seller has not got back to me seeing as I am not after the scope they will probably not respond now.
He previously offered it on the WAF: Wehrmacht-Awards.com Militaria Forums
Sorry guys this is the reply I got so the tube may have been heavily corroded and cleaned off but by heck if so then the tube will be very thin......

Cinders,
I did the same due diligence (learning the art of detecting BS) as a result of your interesting thread. Got exactly the same message this morning. You beat me to responding. SO, we are clear that there's no serial no, and the scope has been 'cleaned' so it is of interest as to its provenance.
Yes just why would you clean it to within an inch of its life I have tried to look at the pics you get the broad arrow but the other stuff it is just not quite clear enough anyway we will see if it surfaces with some one requesting is there anyone here who can repair them.
Same seller now has a similar looking but Canadian ? scope this time, same story, same email answer.

I often think you should have to have a license to buy sandpaper, steel wool and scotch-bright pads, not firearms. So many fine examples have been ruined by the uninformed. Once I found my Holy Grail, a Winchester 92 in 32-20, first year of production, nice brown patina, with wood standing proud of the metal. When I arrived I found out that grandpa decided to spiff it up a bit with a vigorous sanding to the rifle with some 80 grit to do me a favour by cleaning it up. I damn near broke out in tears.
Its the same scope at least he/they are using the same pics will drop them another e mail and see what gives be very suspicious that one has not 1 but 2 sniper scopes from the same day in 1944 heirlooms or not.
I sent this message similar to what I asked before but made no mention of their previous sale will see what gives and if not happy will get the fleabay police onto them to see if their is any impropriety as they have not mentioned anything about the previous sale falling through I.E Re-listed item.

Does the scope have a serial No. on it or makers stamping so the scope can be traced via a military forum that offers such a service.
It helps with records of WWII sniper rifles.
Thanks for your time.
Got a reply but I still have reservations about this whole deal as this scope has been advertised and bid on before by this seller, there has been no indication from the seller that it is a re-listed item and I am just thinking do they have a shill bidder there as it seems strange that the scope re-appears after being sold.
I checked their sales from the last 6 months and this item does not appear anywhere as being sold so whether they have canned the sale because the expectation in the price was not there who knows be interesting to see where this heads.
So their reply was to my question;

That's right it would be correct...because guys yanked them off rifles and just tossed them in a corner of a house. What a bunch of crap. Save your coin for some "Brisbane Bitter XXX"...
