very rough crome .455 MK VI

Just found a rough cromed MK VI.
It looks like it was rough befor the croaming took place, and then left again to deterioate, then attacked with wite wool and a file.
Rough marks in many places,
No serial N°s left, or proof markes, so NO colectors veaue to ruin.
not even sure if it is an Enfield or a Webley.
The rest workes fine, barrel OK and chambers clean, just a little play in the cylinder lock, but thenit is a Wibley Wobley Webley or Enfield.
I am thiking about painting it with suncrite as I think the paint
will cover the undulations better,
Can you brush on the Suncorite.?
Any sugestions as to another finish?

Peter and a couple others will catch this eventually and let you know about the sunkorite, I think it was applied by local armorers with brush...baked on. I wonder if you should remove the chrome though? That would be an acid bath, I think muriatic acid is what's used. It's toxic as well as harsh so you might want to contract it out if you do that. I've also glass bead blasted it off 1911s that came from central America in the '80's. They blued and parkerized perfectly after.

Better to just have the chrome bead blasted away and the pistol phosphated. Or blued over the fine bead blasting., If the steel is pitted, then it is what it is but with some protection, it isn't coming back. Brush painting sunkorite. Well....., you could but i'll never adhere to chrome, believe me!

as the revolver is realy not worth anything, just looks very c**p, but it shoots well,
I think any finish other than the sanded, filed scrartched and not very flat crom would be better,
I will see if a friend can do some fine bead blasting.
I had better take a few better pics to show the DIY sh*t work.

Yes, and if there are pits, they'll be completely cleaned out at the same time. You can't hide them but it'll look like the first day again. If the blue salts are new and strong, it will give it a nice rich black finish. You won't want to stink the house out with sunkorite then...and the oven...

Remember, glass beads not sand. Sand can change the geological structure of your pistol. You can remove things with sand...like shape.

In some cases a gun that looks a bit of a dog act mongrel thing that is not worth a hoop of dog p**p but which canes the cr*p out of other pampered pooch fire arms that look like they just left the armoury all of a sudden people realize crikey you do not need a dazzling example of a weapon as we just got pants'ed by a cruddy looking chrome thingy. You will find people gravitate towards it, in-fact may offer to buy it

Once you get the chrome off you could JB weld the pitting and spray paint it with Krylon.

Pitting........ you ain't seen real pitting on pistols yet! It's a military pistol and that's how they get........ rusty and pitted. We used to see them like that every day of the week. In the tropics and salt water swamps they were pitting from day 1 Through the bead blaster to remove and neutralise the rust, phosphate (or chemically black, your choice) and you've got a perfectly satisfactory pistol again. No concourse prizes but a) looks a zillion times better than it did, b) it ain't going to rust no more and c) worth a lot more too

What is used to phosphate?

I have seen Brownings going through that are worse than that. What had made it worse than the pitting/corrosion is the sheer butchery with a file and coarse sand paper. That was criminal! If you want to stop the rot and start the improvement you need to strip it and have it bead blasted. Ask a local engineering works for their advice re the processes you have there. Same as protecting it further. They will have details of phosphating facilities or chemical blacking.

I did write a harsh email to the seller to tell him where he F***ED up.
It was cheap ish,
but when you cannot fing a MK VI you have little choice.
They are all cat D2 here and that means free to buy if you are over 18,
and no requirements on storage or transport, as long as you have a good reason for having it in the car.
It was sold as a webley, but it could be an enfield, is there any way to tell as there are no markings.

Good grief, someone really attacked that poor thing! Bit of a catch 22 that one, it needs more careful work to the metal to cosmetically square up the damage, prior to refinish, but quite a lot of material has already been removed...

Yes it has had a T**T work on it.
The frame and barrel look bad but are useable.
The cylinder realy needs replacing, it is now a little smaller in diamiter than a MK 1.
By about 0.6 mm at the worst, and 0.3 mm bigger at best
It still works, every thing is tight, a little too much play at firing but lines up.
I have shot light loads and it works.
